Legends

Legend, a word often used to describe players who are somewhat ordinary. It was though, a true pleasure to spend some of the second half against Tilbury in conversation with Roger Day, Jimmy Quail, Roy Thomas, Gordon Sedgley and Peter Terry. All sixty-something genuine legends from a time when Enfield were the best team in amateur football. Over a thousand Enfield appearances between them, together with countless medals and amateur international caps. Jimmy Quail commented that at one stage in the early sixties Enfield were unbeaten at home for over two seasons. Let's hope all hope that's something that ETFC can achieve in our new home.

Roger Day used to bring real humour to a game.

I remember one time when EFC were on the attack and Roger was following a winger. "I'm here, I'm here" says Roger so the forward passes to him.

"I don't want it!" he then says.

Another time we were playing at the stadium and Roger had collected the ball. He was so cool that he stepped around a yard away and started to direct players. "You go there - xxx come to me." The opponents were so bemused that they stood back and just looked. "To me To me" he said and then took another step back from the stationary ball. It is possible that by this time the opponents must have thought it was a free kick as they made no attempt to get the ball. Eventually a defender cottoned on that Roger was taking the rise and made a challenge. Quick as a flash Roger took the ball away.

Jimmy Quail used to bounce back between us and Hendon. A fantastic inside forward.

Peter Terry - the copper- if he stayed on the pitch for the whole game you had a good performance from him. Almost as many sendings off as Andy Jones (no not quite).

Royston Thomas a tricky little winger. Played in goal when Malcom Mitchell broke his arm at Wembley in the 1964 final.

Gordon Sedgley a loyal club man. I dont think he went back and forward to Hendon.
