AV or FPTP?

Recommended Posts

I think AV is better than the current system as it would reduce the number of safe seats and reduce the chance of one party having a monopoly on power with just 40% of the vote - a la the Tories in the 1980s and Labour recently. I believe it would help to increase the turnout as more votes actually will count.

Admittedly it would not be ideal and safe seats would remain but it is a step in the right direction.

Any views?

I don't agree with AV myself. I don't want a second choice quite often and I don't want to see even more coalition governments in the future. The only way coalition governments work is when they decide to do less and be heard from less and thats not what we'd get in this country.

I'll be voting to keep the current system. AV is a small step towards PR , which will destroy this country. I prefer to see a strong government with a decent period in office. Coalition government fudges most things, especially when the junior partners are chancers like this lot.

Anything that stops the Tories ruining jobs and working conditions has to be applauded. AV is certainly not perfect, but its a much fairer system than FPTP.

Democracy is two foxes and a chicken voting on what to eat for lunch.

It's not great but it's the best we've got.

No AV for me.

Great analogy Hookey

Anything that stops the Tories being in power again on their own for a generation works for me - but i would like to see what happens if Clegg loses the vote and FPTP remains.

Surely that was the whole point of him entering the coalition wasnt it? It might collapse if AV fails.....

AV for me.

Might prompt some of the 'saf'e MP's to actually do some work pre-election and during their tenure instead of getting-in, then 'disappearing' for the best part of the next four years.

..... Not that I would dare accuse Sir Paul of spending more time in his dentists surgery than actually doing something for his constituents of Mole Valley !
