I will always explain decisions. You can make the right call but annoy players by not communicating . Classic example is an off the ball foul. If you don't indicate clearly what has been given, the players who were challenging for the ball will be mystified. Telling them to shut up is not going to work wonders.

I will always talk to the players from the beginning of the game. There may come a time though when a player has just given you too much grief and far from wanting me to explain he just wants to have a go and at this point I just make it clear that I no longer wish to chat to him ... unless it is formal

Well spotted SF :) Cant have it both ways guys !!!

Weebs I have no idea. If they have had nothing but grief in a game then possibly they do not want to talk to anyone and that has happened to me in the past. Not excusing it Weebs. Each Ref has a different personality and some find it tough to communicate.

Ok ta Kroons as I say this respect thing is sometimes difficult on both sides...

CORRECT MEW. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE REFEREE COMMUNICATES WITH THE PLAYERS AS OPPOSED TO BEING OBNOXIOUS. BY EXPLAINING WHY THE REFEREE MADE A DECISION, WILL CALM EVERYONE DOWN SO LESS CARDS ISSUED, EVEN BETTER REFS SHOULD HAVE A BANTER WITH THE PLAYERS. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN PLAYING, I TOLD THE REF YOU'RE HAVING A NIGHTMARE, BUT WHEN MY STRIKE HIT THE TOP TIER OF THE STADIUM, HE RAN PASSED ME AND SAID, DID YOU SAY I WAS HAVING A NIGHTMARE !!! ........ BRILLIANT ! MADE ME LAUGH AND THAT'S ALL IT TAKES ...........................COMMUNICATE !

But just as some referees do not communicate very well, some players are impossible to talk to

Exactly. Goes both ways. Some captains are great and you can work with them to control the game. Others... well... you know within minutes that they are just going to moan and moan and moan and get themselves in the book or worse. "It's not dissent if I'm not swearing at you" was my favourite.

I had my debut Ryman Youth League middle last night. Both sides total credit to the game. Firstly, they were there to play football rather than try and kick lumps out of each other. This meant lots of advantage could be played without moaning going on. Secondly, the attitude of the management teams was very positive and the players behaviour reflected this.

Of course, I'd like to think that my communication helped..... ;-) "No surprises" is a common briefing theme within referee teams. I combine that with "We are here to get this right but also to enjoy ourselves. So the theme for today is lots of smiles and eye contact".
