RESERVES

Recommended Posts

Is it worth having reserve sides, Correct me it im wrong but 4 of the top 6 have no reserve sides.

Me personally think reserves are good but seems like Guildford an Cherstey have thrown all there eggs in one basket and for Guildford its paid off and maybe Chertsey

IF GUILDFORD AND CHERTSEY HAVE THE BUDGET TO KEEP AN 18 MAN SQUAD HAPPY AND THEN IF NEED BE GET A PLAYER ON LOAN SO BE IT, BUT OTHER CLUBS CANNOT AFFORD THIS SO THEY TRY TO PROMOTE WITHIN, THIS IS WHY THE RESERVES ARE SO IMPORTANT TO THE STRUCTURE OF A FOOTBALL CLUB, WHAT CHANCES DO THE YOUTH TEAM PLAYERS HAVE AT EITHER CLUB ? I'M SURE THAT THE YOUTH TEAM PLAYERS WHO HAVE JUST HAD THEIR LAST SEASON WILL GO ELSEWHERE TO ANOTHER CLUB TO MATURE IN SENIOR FOOTBALL AT RESERVE TEAM LEVEL AND IF GOOD ENOUGH EMERGE INTO THE 1ST TEAM SQUAD.

IT DEPENDS WHAT THE FOOTBALL CLUB CAN AFFORD AND WHAT INFRA-STRUCTURE THEY WANT.

And it depends if the youngsters are good enough Nice Guy, I am sure teams will be playing youngsters as soon as the manager sees fit, I took 5 players under 19 ( three sixteen year olds ) away to Farnham this season and had a man sent off after 20 minutes and got the win 2-1, I know since I left 2 of the younger lads have carried on in the first team and have bright futures, how ever the reserves at Lammas this season have been poor, but we have now introduced a squad of 16 year olds for next season who are showing a lot of potential, we aim to bring in some quality older players to brung the older ones through and already we have had 3 play for the first team..

Possibly at some clubs, NG. NOT DFC ! Peter Buckland has used one Under 18's player on and off through the season and at one recent match, I believe Peter had THREE Under 18's on the bench.

From just my point of view, if it's a case of money , then give me a youth side before a reserves side.

READ MY COMMENTS BJR ''AT EITHER CLUB'' MEANING GUILDFORD AND CHERTSEY

AGAIN BJR YOU ARE MISSING MY POINT. I'M ALL FOR YOUTH AND RESERVE TEAM FOOTBALL IF THE CLUB INFRA-STRUCTURE DEMANDS IT.

I AM MAINLY TALKING ABOUT CHERTSEY & GUILDFORD, MY COMMENTS STATE THAT THERE ARE CLUBS WHO DO NOT HAVE THE FINANCIAL CLOUT TO GET LOAN PLAYERS AND KEEP A SQUAD OF 18 HAPPY. YES, THE DFC YOUTH TEAM PLAYER/S WENT STRAIGHT INTO 1ST TEAM OR SITS ON THE BENCH WHICH IS FINE FOR EXPERIENCE, BUT WHAT IF THEY ARE NOT INCLUDED WHAT DO THEY DO ON A SATURDAY ? IF THE CLUB HAVE A RESERVE TEAM THESE TALENTED YOUTH TEAM PLAYERS WILL GET REGULAR ''SENIOR'' FOOTBALL EVERY SATURDAY AND GAIN THAT EXPERIENCE WHICH WILL BE BETTER FOR THEM WHEN THEY ARE SELECTED FOR THE 1ST TEAM.

The first team manager and reserve team manager must be able to liase, and get on.

I think the real problem with running a reserve team can be summarised, thus.......

SCENARIO........

Friday night, and reserves team manager's phone rings..... "Hallo mate. Look - I've got a real problem for tomorrow. Three first team players have cried off, so I need A, B and C, and I will need D and E on the bench !!"

Hardly worth the reserve team turning out now, surely ??

Reserves are a good idea to be a stepping stone into the first team and to ensure fringe players and returning injured players get match time.

The manager has to understand that first team have first shout on the players and accept that players may be lost on Friday night or even on match day.

If the relationship between the two managers is poor then forget it, get a new ressie manager.

BUT THATS WHERE YOU ARE WONG BJR, THIS IS WHERE THE YOUTH TEAM PLAYERS COME INTO PLAY GAINING THEIR EXPERIENCE BY BEING SELECTED AND PLAYING ''SENIOR'' FOOTBALL FOR THE RESERVES....... ITS CALLED PROGRESSION

Quite a few of our youth team players play for our reserves in the Suburban South but are not ready for the extra physical demands of the CCL.

There are a few exceptions of course and we have just put one 18 year old on a contract for next season.

Many reserve team players are happy playing there as they like the club they play for but many want first team football.

We have used almost 80 players this season in our reserve side which finished 7th.

We have a good management team in place, ideal for the level as they have good contacts and have youth team managing experience.

The reserve team costs a lot of money to run and I can see why some clubs run only 1st XI and youth.

I look forward to the new Suburban League proposals for next season as well!coffee%20(2).gif

The players in the Suburban League are getting younger and younger. A lot of clubs are now using it as a stepping stone for breaking in their youth / academy players.

The reserves is always the hardest job because, as BJR has mentioned, the managers will get late phone calls which mean their players being taken away by the first team. It's something the managers have to learn to deal with as it's always been the case at this level and always will be.

I don't understand why clubs like Farnborough have a reserve side when very few of their players play for the first team. Due to their transfer embargo earlier on this season Boro were struggling to name three subs for some games. Why not pull in some reserves? Isn't that what they're there for? I can understand the club thinking the players may not be ready for Conference South football but surely having a couple of players sitting on the bench just in case is better than having none. And how are they gonna get experience if the club just gets players from other clubs rather than using their own players? They may as well rename their ressies Bisley and let them get on with it.
