Grant-McLellan Youth Cup Final

Recommended Posts

Please note that the Grant-McLellan Youth Cup Final on Thursday 28 April between Bedfont Sports and Knaphill has been switched to Bedfont Town FC from Ashford Town FC. The reason is that Ashford's pitch has suffered in recent weeks and is now due to undergo remedial action, whereas the surface at Bedfont Town is amazingly good for this time of the season, as indeed was Egham's for the Reserve Final last week.

On a personal note, I would like to mention that the present condition of Ashford's pitch is in no way the fault of our groundsman, Ben Jacobs. He has done an excellent job and until about six weeks ago, you would not have thought that it was being used by four different teams (3 Ashford teams, albeit that there are a limited number of reserve matches, and Staines Lammas). Unfortunately, the break down of the water sprinkler system (now finally working again I understand) and the decision to allow the 1st Team to use it for both training and warming up in the worst of the weather has taken a massive toil.

Work is now starting to bring the pitch back to its normally good surface and the same mistakes will not be repeated next season.

That's good to hear Alan and I dint think anybody was blaming Ben for the state of the pitch, but it's ridiculous that you have trained on the pitch when so much football had been played on it and it seems that they trained on the same part of the pitch, hopefully that's not the case next season as Ashford have always had a decent surface and has the potential to be one of the best surfaces around.. Although money needs to be spent on the pitch and most clubs are struggling with the current financial climate so really Ben needs to have the say who and when people can train and play on the pitch.

Good luck for the new season Alan, let's hope Ashford have a good season and good luck with the pitch.

Good game... Knaphill tried to play football and Sports did not let them.. Good advert for work rate and shutting down..and some good football aswell..Ref had a shocker and the lino on the dug out side seemed more interested in the 4th officials opinion rather than watch the game. It was nice for Whitelaw to ask me for MOM and I gave it to the No5 from BS .. solid and always looked like he had time on the ball a..One for the future, Adam look after him he will go far.

Interesting result, as Knaphill play in the Allied Counties League, which is supposed to be a stronger league that the Southern Youth League that Bedfont Sports play in. Have seen BS a number of times this season and like the way they play and have got some good players for the future, their Captain who broke his leg earlier in the season, is one to watch. Bedfont Sports though only finished 2nd in their League to Camberley Town who have a very strong and disciplined squad.

Jack Woods, Jordan Vidal and George Marks are all good Footballers who have a great chance of playing at a decent level. Congratulations to Sports under 18's good lads and good manager and well done to Dave Reader for a cracking youth set up down at Sports!

Am i right in thinking that Knaphill beat Camberleys Allied side and not there Southern Youth league one or do the same players appear in both?

Speaking to a Camberley Commitee man at the Sandhurst match last week, they are 2 separate Youth teams - the Southern Youth side considered much the stronger (indeed the League is considered much stronger). Their Allied Youth team is apparently mainly younger (U16 / U17) players.

I'd say the Allied Counties League is more even than the Southern Youth League. Both leagues have some decent sides in them but the ACL has more strength in depth.

Because we have two youth teams, we enter one in the FA Youth Cup and one in the Grant McLellan and Knaphill did indeed beat our ACL side this season. Next season it'll be our Allied side in the FA Youth Cup and SYL side in the Grant McLellan but they'll have a raft of new players in so we don't know if the side will be as strong as this season's.

NLN - we do have some of the U18s dual registered so they can play for both sides but, on the whole, that's only used when one team's struggling and of course we can't swap players over in the county cups as both sides enter those.

But I agree, both Bedfont Sports and Knaphill have got decent U18 sides this season. What that means for next season?
