Turner Contemporary

I've been guilty of slating The Turner Contemporary, and as Broadstairs Dave said we should welcome and embrace any new iniativives in Margate which I whole heartedly endorse.

However i went there today with an open mind, and i am very confused by ceratin things.

1) To justify the £17.5M "they" state each visitor would spend £30 a head for the local business. I went there with my wife & step daughter and only spent £5.40p on three drinks from a cafe on the harbour. Where do i need to send the £84.60p too?

2) Stupidily when i read Contermporary i assumed they meant the Building, hence the critisism. Which i though OK not my cup of tea, but i'm no expert on buildings. But i do like a bit of art, i can be moved by paintings and appreciate the artist and his/her brush (ooh eer missus).

3) When they say Contemporary, what they mean is you will find only TWO paintings inside and thats it. One painting done of Magate pier diring the 1800s. (you can see Keith & Colin Page enjoying a picnic) and the well publised Volcanno erupting by Turner. (not sure where this was taken in Thanet, looks as though it could be the start of Southwood Ground)

4) Moving inside the Large white room, with white walls & white ceiling and white floor (good to see Tam managed to shift the surplus stock of paint he had) You see one picture, and a gift shop. I will say there was a comon theme coming from the spendid display of goods".... "How Much?".. i particular like the idea of picking up stones from the beach, sticking them in a vase and charging..."How Much?"

5) For some unknown reason they have built inside, what can only be described as the Largest Lift in the world. I appreciate there are some heavy people in Margate, but MFC can do its training inside. So using the stairs as there is nothing else down stairs apart from a Window looking out onto the sea (well pass the concreste Pavement soon to have MacDonalds wrappers blowing past (sorry i mean contermpoaray pieces), and mirrows silnilar to my bathroom.

6) Whilst walking up the white stairway i thought " You know it would like nice with some pictures hanging up"

I then entered a room which obviously they had not finished yet, There were a couple of round Lamp shades, far too low they needed raising, and a pasting table with some wallpaper on it, so i deiscretely left and tried the next room.

7) This room had a wooden shed in it, yes you heard me correctly. Inside were those pictures that i can only describe as Etchings, You know the [****!!****] you have to see at a Secondary School open day, Black paint with scrathches on them with a light behind each one luminating it. The etchings were quite good (they would have made the Gallery in vision on), But strangley they were of Margate Seafront (today). Which i found quite odd as if i step out of the Turner Contemporary, the real thing is right before me.

8) The famous Turner (never heard of it before) Guarded by a YTS lad and a supermarket cloth band infront to stop you from stealing it.

9) The next room which was white had a Mobile in it (must be to cater for the kids) And if i'm not mistken Gandolfs Staff from the film,

10) as time was pushing on we had used 10 minutes already we entered the final room, which was also white, where they had placed a Glass Coffee table. This room must have been the Staff Canteen, the microwave oven had been removed after what looks like a homemade Bread Pudding had exploding onto the white walls.

11) another view of the sea from a window.

12) Downstairs, inbetween Thank you for coming could be heard "How Much?"...

Turner would be proud, i only hope when we get our Stadium we can compete with such a prestigous monument.

With the Turner Contemporary supposedly attracting the 'higher end' market perhaps we can rely on Banksy being the graffiti artist to deface the building before the usual mis-spelt local neanderthal scrawling sets in?

I will venture there just to confirm what I already know.

However have already seen the whole exhibition when Meridian Tonight went around the place slowly to take up 3 minutes of air time.

Thinking of taking my cat down there and letting it cr@p on the floor and then charge the Turner Comtemporary a couple of thousand pounds so that people can appreciate the expressionist realisation of urban living from a feline prospective struggling with their inner self to be allowed to state their beliefs and views in a safe and friendly envoiroment.

(thats the cat needing a [censored] indoors in plain English)

I suspect that any one associated with Margate's new attraction seeing this thread would say, "GOTCHA". Now I'm no artist (as you all know), but if the objective of the art (and the buidling for that matter) is to provoke a reaction, then job done I guess. Having said all that, perhaps they're saving the good stuff for when people have to pay.

I would thoroughly recommend the Tate Modern, mind you. Lot's of stuff many people wouldn't call "art" but ther is lots, it is provocative and it is mostly free!

What has wound me up though, is the talk of the Turner being part of the regenration puzzle for Margate, including the heritage amusement park planned for Dreamland ... but you would have thought a sucessful football team playing in a modern stadium would also have formed part of that picture ... and not a dickie bird from any of the local officials interviewed.

It will be a nightclub within 5 years or a music venue

maybe they can call it The Ship?....

Yeah the "Ship". Back to the old days Frankie or were you refereeing to those high seas in winter we sometimes see. Could end up floating ,or should I say "sinking" like a ship, could it not? After all, they've said its going to be open all year round. Who the **** is going to want to go anywhere near the place in mid winter.

Nice description, but the building is not painted White. The colour is in fact, RAL 9016 :)

Maybe we can have some RAL 9016 in our kit next season.

If not-i just hope we sign a player by the name of White

cheesy%20(2).gif they cut half my name off...think I need to change to save confusion! When I was drinking in the Ship we occasionally got the windows washed by the waves in midwinter...the beer was the only reason for braving the rough weather...nearly as breezy as HDP in the winter!

agree i went on the opening day just to see if its crap as it looks, and yes i think its worse than i thought,i cant believe we been dooped into believing this will bring the art world to our door step, the only people thats going to be on the door step is piss heads and druggys as its pretty hidden in places.as i was walking out, the radio lot were there getting reactions from people ,and thought great my turn to sling a bit of mud about the stadium ,council etc soon as they saw me they switched it off lol,i cant see it lasting as a galley the crap factor is to much, but i do agree it would make a good venue for concerts, sea life center,3d cinama, water park, leisure centre, just something the people of thanet need, not a white concrete elephant.:arcadefreak:

A nightclub is actually a very good shout. Though I suspect they will keep throwing money at it for quite a few years yet.

Yeah our money......................

Is there a way that the club could use the TC it to its benefit ?

Should all away supporters attending a Margate game bet a voucher for half price entry to the TC?

Should all TC visitors get a voucher for 50% discount to Margate games.

Should some soiled Margate kit in fact form the centre piece of the exhibition?

I think both 'theatres of interest and entertainment' may be cryijng out to get numbers through the door in sufficent quantity next season
