HISTORIC BARKING PROGRAMMES NUMBER 11

As we have had quite a lot of history already this time here is not a programme but an item which takes fewer words to describe yet is no less a reminder of a bygone and very different era.It is a postcard sent on 11th December 1928 sent by J.T.Gordon to E.J McBirney saying “ You have been selected to play on Saturday next 15 Dec 1928 versus Woking FC at Barking kick-off 2.30 pm. For away matches the card also said “ Charabanc leaves Public Offices at ....p.m. sharp.

Mr Gordon was club secretary at the time and a distinguished former Barking player himself. The card is headed Barking Town F.C. ,3 Ripple Road, Barking. Phone Grangewood 2334. This may have been Mr Gordon’s home telephone number as the club’s exchange ,if a telephone was installed at the ground, would probably have been Rippleway.

The card bears a George Vth stamp and was addressed to 85, Meadow View Villas, Mawneys Road,Romford. The game against Woking was in the 1st round of the F A Amateur Cup and we won 6-1.
