Ryman League - Basingstoke Town 0 Hornchurch 3

Today we saw another storming performance against a Basingstoke side who were never really in it. We were 2-0 up within 20 minutes and in the sweltering heat they were always going to struggle to pull that deficit back.

We went ahead in the 9th minute when Jamie Southon powered home a header from a Jude Sterling throw. Another Sterling throw gave home keeper Scott Tarr some work to do 3 minutes later when he had to push it from under the bar. We made it 2-0 in the 17th minute following some good work in the corner by John Keeling. He passed to Sterling who ran along the edge of the area and unleashed a shot which Tarr could only parry into the path of Gavin McGowan who scored unchallenged. Basingstoke had perhaps their best chance of the game in the 30th minute when Craig McAllister glanced a header across goal and wide from a Nathan Wallace cross, but the game was effectively over 10 minutes before half time when another Sterling throw caused problems in the Basingstoke defence and Andy Douglas was presented with a tap in to make it 3-0.

So it was foot off the gas for the rest of the match although we still looked dangerous going forward and always looked as though we could easily step up a gear or two. Steve West missed a great chance in the 56th minute when he managed to put a Sterling far post cross over the bar from 6 yards, and we found the net for the fourth time 3 minutes later when Andy Douglas scored only for it to be disallowed for an earlier offence, a decision which so enraged George Borg that he was ordered out of the dug-out by the referee.

Line-up:- Gay, Gooding, Kerrigan, Adedeji, West, Southon, Keeling, Sterling, John (A Martin 76), Douglas (Maynard 83), McGowan (J Martin 83). Subs not used:- Hankin, Collier (GK)

Yeah, another great performance. Thing are really starting to happen. I just hope the team doesn't start to get carried away and assume promotion will be theirs. There's a long way to go but it looks real good right now. Good atmosphere on the coach on the way back too! "We love you Hornchurch, we do"!!
