4th Official

Recommended Posts

After watching the Match last night where there were 4 Officials in charge of the game,I think this should be adopted in the C.C.L..Yes I hear you say, where is the money coming from, but I think Clubs could save money by this being introduced.Reason the 2 benches were impeccably behaved,no swearing or cussing at the Players or Officials, hence no bookings.Seemed also to create a better atmosphere for the paying Supporters.I must add a proviso though, maybe Colliers Wood and Corinthian-Casuals behaviour is like this all the time.

The 4th official would typically also be the reserve referee. This means that are premier division level they would need to be a level 4.

As has been mentioned before, there are perhaps too many level 4s around right now, hence some struggling to get their minimum of 10 games in during the season (weather has not helped with that). 4th official duties would not count, sadly, and it would probably be more worthwhile for them to be doing other middles, even if lower level, to keep their sharpness up.

Remember that those level 4s will also be called up to be assistants at Contrib level.

However, now that I think about it, as it stands if the referee goes down the senior assistant will take over and they won't be a level 4. So a lower level referee could be 4th official if the league approved it. The thing is, you would need to find officials who would WANT to do that as opposed to assist or be doing middles somewhere else....

Ideally the benches and those on them should behave themselves without the need for the presence of a 4th Official!

Rubbish idea.

Referee and assistant fees are going up again next year already and clubs cannot afford any more. If clubs constantly get fines for their bad behaviour, it is down to them to sort it out.

This happens quite often with benches acting in the appropriate manner, so not anything to do with a 4th official being present, just the way it sometimes is.

Plus, the leagues are all crying out for referees and asistants, so why stick them on a chair between two dugouts sorting balls and substitutes out.

Funnily enough we've already had 4th officials in this league, when AFC Wimbledon were in this league they always had a 4th man at their home games it worked really well, when I was mamager at Farnham we played against them and having an official to sort out the two robust benches allowed the Ref to concentrate on the game also it may not sound a big thing but when I made substitutions to have somebody organising it properly was a help as well, during the match there was an incident involving our right back and the AFC left midfeilder which the ref did not see but the 4th official did and they duly sorted it out between themselves, we lost 4 1 but it was a good experience in front of nearly 5000 people and great to hear them all singing feck off baldy feck off after the game Happy days.

Two things

I do not believe there is a shortage of officials on Saturdays ... I think that most Level 4s average at least one free Saturday per month. I personally have 2 free Saturdays in April (3 if you count Easter Saturday although I do have a game on Good Friday)

That said, I do not think that officials would be queueing up to do fourth official/reserve official duties. It could be something to be considered though for high profile games or at the request of clubs.

If you are having a 4th Official on CCL games then you would have to have them on the leagues above that do not have them. so we are moaning about the quality of referees but a lot of them will be being 4th officials now so you would have ot have the next layer as the refs on this league.

AFC Wimbledon paid for the 4th official every game because there were so many problems on their early games who thought they were there to be shot at.

Surely, subs should be able to sort their own balls out !
