Daventry 1-2 Slough

Recommended Posts

Following twitter updates, slough have won 2-1.

This is a massive and unexpected 3 points.

The 3 points have now put us 2 points clear of Rugby with 2 games in hand on them. This now puts us in a very strong position to make the play offs.

The win has also ended Daventrys' 17 game winning streak and also our "we cant beat a team above us" streak.

I didnt go to the game but i have to say a huge well done to the lads who played, wish i could have gone now.

Absolutely magnificent performance - full credit must go to Steve and the boys. I thought we had done our homework and were well prepared and set about them with a high tempo pressing game working the ball into the channels and looking to play the better football. We didn't let them settle on the ball and save for a number of free kicks in and around the area we didn't allow to create too many clear cut chances. Bully's handling of the crosses was superb and I thought Woozley was immense at the back. He cut a very commanding figure and the pairing with Seebs looks excellent. When they pulled one back it was backs to the wall stuff as the players had run themselves into the ground but we hung on for a thoroughly deserved three points and I consider this a "bonus" game.

But 1-11 were superb and it was a team performance above all else. Definitely in the top three performances of the Bateman era alongside the spanking of Biggleswade earlier in the season and the play-off win at Hitchin last season.

Pressed for a man of the match (as I am writing the match report), the debate behind the goal was between Coyne who grew into the game, was immense in the tackle and always looking to press and be creative and Sonner who was his typical self. He run his nuts off, leapt like a salmon to win headers against players 5 or 6 inches taller and yet again weighed in with a vital goal. Sonner just nicked it. But honestly it couild have gone to anyone of them.

Keep that up boys - an absolute pleasure to watch.

If the players and management are reading this, last night was the best example ever of why us supporters are often critical......because we know that as individual players and collectively as a team we are capable of IMMENSE performances like last night.

You could see whay Daventry have gone on their prolonged winning streak. They were strong, well organised, quick and fit but right from the first whistle last night we matched them. As Martin said we moved the ball quickly, defended in numbers when we didn't have the ball but attacked in numbers also so actually caused them more problems than they caused us, certainly in the firsts half. The goal just before half-time was a real bonus and reward for an excellent opening half. Sean Sonner got behind the defence and as the keeper came out the ball ran for Sincs who fired it into the net.

At half time we thought it was going to be backs to the wal stuff right from the second half but to our credit we didn't sit deep and kept pushing and were rewarded with a second goal almost straight away. A poor clearance from the Daventry keeper (Ben Foster's younger ginger brother!) was put back into the box and as the keepr tried to recover his mistake and collect the ball, Sean Sonner found himself in space on the right hand side of the box but with two players on the line. He curled his shot past both of them into the far side netting for 2-0!

The Daventry goal with 10 or so minutes left was almost inevitable as they came into the game but we limited their remainign attacks to just one single chance - a free header at the far post in the last minute which we thought Bully had saved but according to Chris might have been a Murphy deflection onto the post. A deserved stroke of fortune and we were mightily relieved to see the rebound blazed over the bar.

As Martin said, 1-11 were superb. Bully commanded his area well, the full backs got forward when necessary but defended solidly to stop crosses coming in. Woozley and Seeby were again fantastic and with due respect to Perkins must be our first choice centre-back pairing. I definitely think Woozley is the right choice as captain.

The midfield four defended in numbers but also supported the front two which meant they weren't isolated and we could actually hold the ball up front when it went forward. As for the front two I'm not sure how they both last 90 minutes. Constant running, chasing, never giving up and never giving the Daventry back four any time on the ball.

Difficult to pick individuals out but Paul Coyne was exceptional. Was hard in the tackle and got the ball forward into some great areas and really controlled the middle of the park when we had the ball. Danny Burnell is clearly a great goal scorer but often other aspects of his game let him down. Last night however he got his head in the right place, chased everything, held the ball up brilliantly and brought others into play. He did pick up a booking towards the end for hurling the ball towards their number 15 who'd won a free kick with a dive that even my Alfie would have been embarrassed about. Despite all the goals Danny has scored I'd say this was his best performance in a Rebels shirt as he basically just got on with playing football. Long may that continue.

And then there's Sean Sonner. He must have lungs the size of an elephant! He ran and ran and ran after everything (as usual) and caused their two centre backs all sorts of issues winning balls in the air he had no right to get near. Oh yeah, and he was instrumental in setting up the goal for Sincs and scored a superb second!!

Apologies for long post but last night goes down as one of my favourite Rebels performances for many years!!!! Let's now believe in ourselves that we can go out and do that to any team in this division. COME ON YOU REBELS!!!!!!
