Marriage

Recommended Posts

I see that the number of marriages in England and Wales is at its lowest rate since records began in 1862. According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) only 21.3 out of 1000 men aged 16 and over tied the knot in 2009 whilst the level for women was even lower at 19.2. The ONS put the falling rate down to a rise in the number of people who cohabit rather than marry and who delay their wedding plans indefinitely, ONS research shows the inspiration to marry is still high amongst the younger generation but fewer and fewer are fulfilling that aspiration. It's a sad state of affairs isn't it if you consider that in the 'good old days', long before 'Broken Britain' kicked in, it would be frowned upon not to get married after a short engagement and having a child out of wedlock was taboo, how times have changed!

Have you, as a father of 6, ever been married?

Rhodes, When, in your opinion, did the "Good Old Days" end and "Broken Britain" begin?

The Doog Is King - That's a difficult one to answer but I think it was pretty much around the time when the Berlin Wall came down, that started a 'free for all' didn't it and now you have Countries such as Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovenia in the EC, no wonder there is out of control immigration which has resulted in so called Broken Britain

interesting viewpoint as always rhodes. Personally I would put part of the origin back to 'The Winter of Discontent' or possibly even earlier.

LATO - You mean in 1979 and the end of James Callaghan's beleaguered reign as Prime Minister, well I don't disagree with you but it's surely immigration that has predominantly resulted in Broken Britain, we should have taken a leaf out of Australia's book a long time ago

Doog is King - As you know our green and pleasant land is full up to the rafters, the current population level of the UK is overstretching the NHS, housing and our schools largely due to asylum seekers, illegal immigrants and other freeloaders from places like Africa and Eastern Europe. Where is it all going to end!

All very well blaming immigrants who traditionally have been welcome and hard working whilst contributing with tax and NI contributions, its folks who seem to think they have a god given right to breed while not being able to afford it adding to the taxpayers burden let alone NHS, schools and housing.

Not bothering to marry and provide sound role models, men who disappear out of their children's lives, expecting the state to provide boundaries and care.

Loosely - Well you seem to know an awful lot about it all of a sudden, a small minority of immigrants may well be traditionally hard working whilst contributing with Tax and National Insurance contributions but they eventually bring their families over don't they, claim benefit and overstretch the NHS, housing and our schools, that's my point

it's your point and you are entitled to make it but it's a bit of a gross generalisation from you as usual.

Well Rhodesly since I've worked with the kids and "families" involved in this type of behaviour for years then perhaps I know just a bit more than you. The social "breakdown" in this country stems from the breakdown in traditional values, those of bringing up children in stable environments providing solid role models and those role models paying for their choices.

Of course I realise that you know all about it from the other side, never having married, having legions of kids and not paying for them or providing a home for them. Please tell us all you know.

Its not just the breakdown in traditional values that have caused the social breakdown in this country. We now live in a celebrity obsessed society where people like Jordon and Kerry Katona and a host of useless talentless wannabes get more exposure in the media than all the people that do good things, and actually make a difference, put together, and its hardly surprising that a largely poorly educated generation tend to idolise these people.

We also have a society where a small but significant proportion are super rich beyond most peoples imagination, and yet a whole generation could be excluded from society because they cannot find employment and the self respect and financial rewards that having a job brings. There is also the problem of young black kids that appear to talk a different language, and who think that normal rules of a decent society don't apply to them, and the politically correct who refuse to acknowledge there's a problem, and condemns anyone that does, racist.

The problem is that we have enough layabouts of our own without importing thousands upon thousands of immigrants who DON'T want to work.No problem with people coming to this country if they are law abiding, work and contribute to our society but I don't want all the scum here which seem to be all too apparent in our big cities & towns

Unfortunately, there's nothing to disagree with there. During the past few weeks I did some work for the census, and was amazed how many people cant even read or write, and how many people have lived in this country for years, and have never done a days work in all that time, and yet still live in accommodation that people that work their socks off cant afford.

It's not just imigrants that have problems with literacy.

I know several people in the prison service, and one of them told me that in a southern young offenders institution, 25 per-cent of inmates, born and bred in this country cannot read or write.!!

I never suggested that it was just immigrants that had a problem with literacy, in fact the majority of people that I encountered that could neither read or write was white, and presumably born and bred in the UK.
