HISTORIC PROGRAMMES NUMBER 10

30-8-1930 LEYTON v BARKING TOWN FRIENDLY LOST 3-1

This is a very poignant programme in view of the recent apparent demise of Leyton. We were both members of the Athenian League in which we played away on Christmas Day,losing 4-0, and at home on Boxing Day when we drew 1-1.Leyton finished 3rd and we were 10th as follows-

It was a high scoring season with a 12-0 victory over Cheshunt and a 10-0 defeat by Wealdstone in the league , a 5-4 defeat by Bromley and 4-4 draws with Sutton United and Hampstead Town. In the F A Cup we beat Brentwood Mental Hospital 2-0 and Grays and Thurrock 5-3 before losing 4-0 to Leytonstone. We beat Walthamstow Avenue 5-0 in the F A Amateur Cup but lost 1-0 to Wimbledon. We reached 3 finals ,winning the Ilford Hospital Cup by beating Ilford 5-1 in the final but losing the West Ham Charity Cup final replay 2-1 to Clapton and the Tilbury Challenge Cup final 4-1 to Romford.

The game was played at Osborne Road (now known as Brisbane Road ), Leyton’s home before it was taken over by Clapton (now Leyton) Orient.

The programme cost 1d (one penny) and listed the club headquarters as the Three Blackbirds Hotel rather than the football ground. The game kicked off at 3.30 pm ,colours were not listed , the players were still numbered 1-22 and our team was listed as S.H.Snook,M.E.Batchelor,A.H.Howell,J.Belt, J.Cornish,J.W.Stannard,S.Baker,A.Field,A.L.Waller,J.W.Oakes,G.W.Mason and our goal was scored by Waller. As frequently occurred in those and later days one of the Leyton positions was filled by A.N.Other.On the same day our reserves entertained Leyton Reserves.

The club was well supported by advertisers with 32 advertisements in the programme, including the Leyton Daimler Hire Service for modern Daimler cars (for younger readers Daimler cars were similar in status to Rolls Royce) ,Dr. Harry Skelton’s Hospital for All Animals, G.P.Malloni- caterer to the Essex County Cricket Ground and Leyton Football Club. Essex County Cricket Club was then based at the County Ground which still exists in Leyton.A.S.Bloy ,high class ladies’ and gent’s hairdressers offered permanent waving in modern saloons (not salons) with modern ideas and F.S Court ,house and estate agent, offered to manage estates, collect rents and was Agent to the Great House Estate.

The Three Blackbirds was “the sportsman’s rendezvous- headquarters to Leyton Football Club ,West Essex Bowls Club and the Pride of Leyton Pigeon Club”.It had a select saloon and lounge and a concert every evening with the finest artistes.W.Tyler ran a Gent’s High Class Toilet Saloon with the motto Comfort,Cleanliness and Civility.
