My Experaince so far and away

Recommended Posts

Ok so many of you would have seen my username pop up all over the place over the last couple of weeks and most of my posts have been asking questions.

So i thought i would share my experience of lower league football so far.

It is still early days and i have only been to the 1 1st team game (Bedworth) and 2 Youth team games (Reading and Wealdstone).

Although i have followed slough Town from a distance pretty much all my life, it has been from a long long distance, hence all the questions.

I have been a Burnley fan most of my life and a season Ticket holder (mentioned just to show i go and not an armchair fan)

I have spent thousands of pounds over the years and covered thousands of miles following my team. Now to be transparent this will never change. You can change cars, jobs, houses, wives and even change your name nowadays but changing a football team, for a real fan is probably an impossibility, well it is for me anyway.

However living in Slough and supporting a northern team does have its problems and more often than not it comes down to money. I have been going up most of the season and rarely miss a Burnley home game Saturday and midweek, the difference this season was i started taking my youngest boy. Leaving at 6AM and not returning until 1AM has been bordering on child abuse :) (they can’t come midweek due to school) and now my sons have started to relate going to football with early mornings late nights and long train journeys . Not a good combination for success. Thankfully over the last 4&7 years I have drummed claret & blue into them so much that it should live on for time to come.

So I have had a change of tactics the last couple of weeks and hopefully will continue onto next season.

So far I am really impressed. Non league is a different world to what I, and my boys have been used to. Bearing in mind last season I was going to places such as Manchester, Chelsea and Arsenal.

However, so far so good. I feel the football is much more up close and personal. You feel part of the whole set up and not just another paying fan through the turnstile, although I appreciate fans helping towards the financial side of a lower league club by going to games is probably more important to teams such as Slough than that of top Premier league clubs.

It has also been a long, long time since I cheered on my local team. I have been introduced to Youth football for the 1st time and even though only a handful of fans there, it still has a great atmosphere and feeling that your support is very welcome.

I have become very attached in a short space of time and constantly looking for updates on the official website and new topics on this board. Now as i already said, I am a Burnley fan, however I intend to fill in the now big gaps in-between Burnley games I can get to with supporting my local team Slough Town and the Youth team. (so Hope no one minds me gate crashing) although what I can assure you, I will always cheer for slough and not come along in my Burnley shirt and slag the team off comparing them to the Clarets. (It does annoy me when fans come along wearing other teams’ colours).

My kids seem to really enjoy the experience and playing at ball boy when they can chase the ball in the stand to throw it back on to the pitch. Apologise in advance if they trample over you to grab the ball :).

They can also bring their friends along and be home in time for dinner and bed.

Ironically, brought one of my kids friends along last night and turned out he was the cousin of Alfie Clark.

So there we go, in short I suppose I just wanted to explain my intrusion on your board with a username supporting a totally unconnected club.

It is back to league football for me on Saturday, as already have tickets. But hopefully will be returning for Youth team action on Wednesday at Reading Town and then 1st team for the home game against Northwood.

Thanks for reading & Good Luck against Burnham.

Burnley fan Rebelling :)

Completely agree, It's always nice to see new faces at the ground, and nearly everyone on here has a league team that they follow as well.

Feel free to come and say hi at a match, just look out for a person in Slough clothes and a camera.

Welcome and may you enjoy many more Slough games in the future
