What happened to Wexham Park Ground

Recommended Posts

I am sure this has been discussed numerous times on various messageboards and is probably a sore subject, but ill risk the scowls to find out the history.

I was just wondering what has happened with Wexham park ground.

Does the club still have any connection with it?

I have noticed cars in the car park occasionally. I never really understood what happened and why the club had to leave. (I was living up north during the time, so no access to local papers ETC)

It is quite sad to see the ground in such disrepair, I remember going there as a kid to see big all ticket games against Wycombe Wanderers Etc.

I am sure there is also a reason why the plans for the new ground are on a different site and not at Wexham.

In a nutshell, owners not prepared to fund STFC, excuse being council won't back their ambitions by giving necessary planning backing and financial assistance. Site not in Slough Borough but South Bucks. Mr. Deaner's Consortium takes over club at last minute and sub leases ground from Mayfair Comms/Thorne family. Unfortunately aforesaid new owner has many cash flow issues during tenure and finally having (alledgedly) not paid the rent to Thornes decides after a supporters meeting to move to Windsor. In the meantime the ground falls into disrepair and is now a relic. STFC could have stayed but wouldn't have been able to pay the rent and would have had no long term security of tenure either.

Thornes presumably waiting to get planning to build houses/supermarket or whatever. I hope they NEVER get the go ahead.

STFC has no connection with the ground now other than a historic attachment.

Oh and the council who once owned the freehold, sold the freehold to Mayfair a few years ago. It's an eyesore and a waste and a shining example of speculation.

New ground is within Slough Borough and therefore under the council's planning auspices, not South Bucks.
