Forum Closure

At the end of the day if you havent done the job yourself, you are not in a position to criticse someone who has, as you have no knowledge of what is involved

All Nathan has been posting on has been about whether criticism should be allowed on a forum. As it happens he has some, albeit limited, experience of running a forum. For some reason, best known to yourself, every time he posts, you belittle him. It doesn't matter what the subject is, or what he says, your fingers go into overdrive. I'm sure you must have a better use for them.

Of course the forum shouldnt be shut down Everyone has a right to express their opinions and anyone who disagrees has a right to say so and hopefully explain constructively why they disagree. I do agree that singling out individual players for criticism is wrong they know when they havent performed to an acceptable level I have never used a players name in any of my posts. The problem we have at the moment appears to be a failure of the moderators to perform one of their functions properly No-one should be allowed to be gratuitously offensive to another member. Calling fellow members idiots and fools isnt constructive and causes ill feeling which then degenerates into a slanging match Moderators should clamp down on this kind of behaviour imo.

I have only just found the forum and now there is talk of getting rid.

Just my Luck.

Getting back on topic...

Firstly, Yes there are a few posters who take a very negative look on things which comes across as rude and disloyal to players. If they mean for it to come across like this who knows.

This must have a negative effect on the players if they read the forum yes and SB has been quoted as saying he does not like what he sees on the forum.

Mark44, I think you make a good point.

I would just like to say that none of my comments have been, or ever will be intended to simply be rude or disloyal.

Thinking back to the comments I made after the Burnham game, I admit they were much stronger than I had intended. I had just come back from a particularly dire performance, and emotions were running a little high. A few weeks after the game I had a private conversation with the chairman, and I apologised for the wording (though not the underlying points) of my comments and asked him to pass them onto the team and management. At the same time, I also promised not to make such postings without first having a "cooling off period", of preferable at least 1 day after such a performance.

Again, none of my postings have ever been intended as rude, and I apologise wholeheartedly if they ever have been interpreted as such.

But, unless a poster consistently make comments that are well out of order (that is to say, personal in nature), then I think they should be allowed to say what they want on this board.

I do not think there is anything wrong with the moderators, it is the responsibility of the posters to be sensible, as I said earlier.

Also, WR your point about lack of football knowledge is very weak. I have only experience of watching Slough over the last 5-6 years or so, but I like to think my posts are thought out and sensible, being critical where needed while trying to see the positives even after defeat. Very few people actually have any experience of playing football at any level, so it is unfair to tar us all with the same brush based on a few people who go over the top with criticism, just because we do not have experience of playing or managing.

I agree, but it wouldnt happen if certain posters didnt post drivel, based on their lack of knowledge of the game

Translated this equates to "Yes, but I'm special, so it doesn't apply to me"

If you are happy with the criticism of players/management thats fine, its your opinion, but all you are doing bringing down the belief of

the players and the club and any potential new supporters. Carry on if thats what you want.

If you actually look at what Nathan has written in this thread, he hasn't criticised the players/management. What he has done is criticised the idea of closing the forum. He has given sensible reasons for his beliefs. I totally agree with him on that.

What he has written doesn't seem to have registered with you. Off you go, yet again, slagging him off, inventing reasons, as he has not criticised players or managent in this thread. Now apparently I'm bringing the club down for disagreeing with you. I have to wonder what planet you are on?

Nigel, I agree with a lot of other posts you write, but cannot agree with you on this one.

In my opinion, the onus is on the individual to say what they think without resorting to personal attacks. I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion, just that a few people tend to vent, particularly soon after a result, and this doesn't help anyone.

Think to yourself, if you've got something to say about a particular player, is this something you'd be happy to discuss with him face to face in the bar?

Fans forums are an integral part of being a supporter in this day and age. And I agree with others who say that posts on ours are quite tame compared to those of other clubs.

Just to clarify as well, this forum has been 'unofficial' for years and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by the club in any capacity. If it was shut down, someone would start a new one and we'd all go there - so that argument is a non-starter.

Lastly Nigel, you would have seen from the Rugby supporters match that I haven't achieved anything in football either, but despite this I hope my opinion still counts for something!

I can't speak for the others but as a moderator myself, I really haven't seen the need to step in. There's been no serious slanging matches, just a few people squabbling and making themselves look a bit silly. As I said above, generally I'd like to see people exercise a bit of self-control. Besides, I often think certain posters deserve their inevitable flaming after some of the posts they contribute!

On that basis some of the best managers in English football shouldn't be allowed to manage at the level they have. An interesting theory!

Must say this a an amusing thread, not a Slough fan but read the forum and as a neutral it seems it is what a forum should be. Give your opinion some will agree some won't if players and managers are affected by what is written then for me they need a reality check. Take the good with the bad and ignore both. They never had forums when I played but if a guy in the crowd gave you some you took it on the chin and had a laugh about it with your teammates. It wouldn't affect your performance but was great for team spirit.

As for the you can't comment if you haven't done the job brigade, that world must be a very boring place.
