HISTORIC PROGRAMMES NUMBER 9

3-5-1930 BARKING TOWN V LEYTON ESSEX SENIOR CUP FINAL TIE AT ILFORD LOST 2-1

This is a very poignant programme in view of the recent apparent demise of Leyton. They were (like us) enjoying happier times then . This was the 1st of 2 successive Essex Senior Cup wins for Leyton as they beat Chelmsford City 2-0 in the following season’s final. They won 8 of their 13 finals ,including their 1st 5 , and made a habit of successive finals, appearing in 2 successive finals 4 times. Their 1st final was on 19-4-1897 when they beat the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiments 4-1 at Leyton County Cricket Ground.

We reached 4 successive Essex Senior Cup finals from 1926-7 to 1929-30 and lost them all, the 1st 3 to Ilford and then this one to Leyton. We have played in 15 Essex Senior Cup finals, winning 7, with a further 4 semi final appearances. Our earliest final was in 1893-4 when,as Woodville, we beat Braintree Gordon 5-1 and then in 1895-6 Barking Woodville beat Woodford 2-0. In our most recent final in 1989-90 we beat Southend United 4-0 after a 1-1 draw, both at Dagenham.

Our path to the final in 1929-30 was –Custom House H 4-1, Colchester Town H 3-0, Ilford 2-2,6-4.

The programme cost 1d (one penny) and proudly recorded that Ilford FC was founded in 1881. The match was played at the magnificent old Ilford ground at Lynn Road, off Ley Street. The president of Ilford was the Reverend H. Dunnico Justice of the Peace (magistrate), Member of Parliament and it must have been a wealthy club as they had a treasurer and 2 financial secretaries. The notes stated that “A keen game should be witnessed. Barking have the distinction of being the first club to lower the Ilford colours in any Amateur Cup tie since September 1928 so they have great hopes of having their name on the cup-sadly these hopes were not to be realised. The 2 local M.P.s (ie Barking and Leyton) have accepted Sir James Slade’s (presumably MP for Ilford) invitation to be present so the rivalry will not be confined to the field.”

On the day Ilford, of the Isthmian League, were playing Dulwich Hamlet at Brentford in the final of the London Charity Bowl, which they won 3-2, and were looking forward to playing Walthamstow Avenue in the London Senior Cup final at West Ham’s Upton Park, which they won 4-1.

Both Leyton and us were in the Athenian League and Leyton were league leaders at the time of this game -they finished 3rd with us 4th-
