I returned to the site of where my football career peaked as an 11 year old as my school played their Essex Schools cup final here in 79. (We were robbed 4-0 that day )

 

The place has certainly changed - gone is the old stand with its barrell roof (asbestosis according to the gateman) and the athletics track around the pitch. In its place are 3 arena stands. 2 of seats, 1 of terrace all infront of the clubhouse/changing room block. The rail around the pitch has seen better days with it being so low in places any small mammals wandering across Southchurch Park would have been in danger of being tripped them up.

 

Scoreline probably about reflected Southend's dominance. Missed plenty of early chances after some decent build up play. When they did take the lead half way through the first half, "The Bas" as their captain kept encouraging came into the game and for the remainder of the half and early stages of the 2nd they had the better of the chances, but once Southend scored a bundled 2nd on 57 minutes, it was game over as Manor relaxed and exerted their pressure once more and wrapped up what was in the end a comfortable win with a couple of neatly taken strikes.

 

I knew I was back in Essex when the referee asked the visiting keeper who had stayed down after a collision if he was ok and the reply was "yeah I'm alright mush".

I was a spectator on Tuesday and I agree with this opinion, there was a time when the small number 11 of Basildon was causing the Manor defence some problems, I believe that was young Frankie Williams that everyone is talking about and if Basildon would have taken a chance it may well have been different. However Manor passed the ball around quite impressively at times and the striker who took his goals really well was lively. Not often I say this but not a bad game of football because Basildon tried to play as well.

The Basildon side was not really much younger than the Manor side.

 

Personally I was suprised to see a Basildon side with so few Meath-heads, although at 3-0 down, a couple of the usual culprits tried to spoil a good game.

And that Pikey kid with the buck teeth who used to play for Burnham kicked out at Kyle over by the Basildon dug out...........then he was mouthing off at the Manor manager and was saying "Wheey have a bite up you fecking mug", not so impressive when your 3-0 down.

 

Thought John's response of, "Don't worry, you'll be evicted in 28 day's" was a cracker ha ha ha ha ha
