Captains

Recommended Posts

Have I missed something or is it now common practice for referees to summon the captain every time he speaks to a player about an incident.

Watched a game over the week end and this happened as it does in rugby and seemed to take up a long time frustrating the team that was awarded the free kick.

Just wondered if it was a new directive from on high?

not sure but it seems a little silly to tlak to the captain as if the player he should be talking to is not there.

I can understand why they try to do it. Perhaps it may be better to look at the dugout, point at the player and shout last warning? Just a thought.

i dont mind the referee having words with me during the game about particular players or decisions he's made. Being that i play centre mid helps as its a short jog to anywhere on the pitch. Different if its the keeper/striker or defender !

I find the ref responds much better and doesnt make rash decisions when we've had good convo's and have an understanding.

Its frustrating tho that at the coin flip all refs say approach but alot dont let you!! Saying that im rb bit annoying when a ref summons you from say lw position like jj says prob easier in a more central psition that said i like refs that talk you through a descision as game has stopped or if you ask nothing better than an approachable ref !!

The RESPECT campaign encourages this.

It is something that I have started doing more in my own refereeing. Having a strong relationship with captains is incredibly important. Of course, this is reliant on them being any good!

In my experience, there are two sorts of skippers:

1. Respected leaders of their team, appointed for that reason. They will work with the referee to effectively manage the team and therefore help the game.

2. Made captain because they are the loudest. Typically first to be cautioned.

3. Have been sent off already due to slapping an opponent.

My edict is that I will always talk to players, but I won't tolerate shouting or the keeper running 40 yards to have a pop.

Anyway, if I have to talk to a player to calm them down then I will always get the skipper in. At the end of the day, they are more likely to listen to him. It also demonstrates that we are all in this together and I'm not there to stomp all over the football.

Truth always hurts!!

I like to talk to captains ... in fact the more players you can talk to the better.

There are some players and some captains though that do not want to talk. Some of them just don't want to talk and some want to tell you how you should be refereeing.

As has been said there are some good ones and some bad ones.

Always try and use them if I feel it will prevent a player from earning a card or if it will calm a situation and with the good captains this can work.

Problem at DFC is that we tend to rotate the Captains. Our keeper has been known to wear the arm-band on occasions.

Captain calming Captain at Dorking then Mewey? Then all hell would break loose.

Just send them both off. Or abandon the game.

Don't fret, Mew ! If you EVER officiate at Meadowbank, I'll ensure the skipper's band goes to a mid-field player.

Pretty much agree with above but I always found the proactive captains would approach you if you were looking to talk to a player re challenge or dissent and they were the best ones.

Did once have a keeper as a skipper who was a complete PITA for about 70 minutes. His forward then had a pop in the oppo penalty area and I called him to one side and asked the skipper to join me. Bit of a risk and got a laugh from the keeper who trotted about 100 yards for me to say keep yourself calm No 9 no need to get a silly caution. And off the keeper went back for another 100 yard trot with me hurrying up so I could start the game. Risky but worked well :)
