Hatfield vs Welwyn

This is an extract from the Welwyn/Hatfield Times' match report of their South Midlands local derby...

It was after the final whistle though that events became unsavoury. One can only speculate as to what sparked the powder-keg off but several players from each side confronted each other.

Highly embarrassed by the affair and acting quickly, Guillermo Ganet, Bob Males and Dave Mansfield, assisted by some sensible players herded the Welwyn team to the far end of the pitch, whilst Bruce Bennett, Lenny Brandon, Phil Nott and others reciprocated for Hatfield heading their team off to the player entrance.

Meanwhile, after a toilet had been vandalised, Club Steward, Gary Bevin closed the bar to avert any further trouble from developing inside the clubhouse.

What was most disappointing and embarrassing about this affair was that complimentary tickets had been issued to all sponsors of both clubs, a large contingent of which were amongst the spectators.

What started as a much needed fund-raiser for both clubs, with this one act of stupidity, could have had an adverse effect, with the fixture being permanently cancelled or sponsorship failing to be renewed for future years.

Only time will tell of the full financial impact that this activity will have had on either or both clubs.

I was thinking this the other day, I know that Welwyn and Hatfield are dumps and are full of scum but maybe we should be looking to find new supporters for the club there. Ultimatly non-leauge football is still very community based and working class to a certain extent, well with all the commuters living here for sleeping purposes the whole community thing has been ripped out, why would you come and watch City when you have no affiliation with the place (and you probably already have a team). W & H haven't been totally infested yet by these people and is certainly still working class.

Worth a thought, take the promotion over there, maybe lay on a coach to the game (pay on the coach for the match ticket and 50p to travel), 4 coach trips from this area and thats 200 people!
