HISTORY FEATURE – BARKING v LEYTON

Following the sad news of the apparent demise of one of the oldest clubs in Essex here are some facts about our meetings with Leyton. They were originally founded in 1868, although there have been some breaks in continuity, and were possibly the oldest club in Essex ,although not the earliest, and the second oldest in Greater London after Cray Wanderers.

We played them in several guises – Leyton of course plus Leyton Second X1 ,Leyton-Wingate and Leyton-Pennant , reflecting their amalgamations with those clubs. Waltham Forest also emanated from Leyton F C. We also played Leyton Argyle,Leyton Mayville,Leyton Orient,Leyton Rovers and Leyton St. Mary’s .Another Leyton connection is that for a time we played in and won the Leyton and District League.

Given that our records of our earliest years are incomplete I cannot say with certainty when we first met but the first known match of 130 meetings was 5th February 1898 when we lost a home London League match 4-0 but we drew the return 1-1.Our last match was a home friendly on 1st August 2009 which we also lost 4-0.

Our most famous game was the 1926-7 F A Amateur Cup final at Millwall on 9th April 1927 which we lost 3-1. Ironically on 26th March 1927 we had beaten them 6-3 in the London Senior Cup.

For many years during our joint tenure of the Athenian League Leyton were our Christmas opponents, often on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, although we never played at home on Christmas Day because of the previous religious connections of the Vicarage Field.

We played 3 seasons together in the London League ,plus 2 more against their Second X1, 4 in the South Essex League,20 in the Athenian League , 1 in the South Essex Combination in 1939-40 and 12 in the Isthmian League.

We also played Leyton in the F A Cup,F A Trophy,F A Amateur Cup,London Challenge Cup, London Senior Cup, London Charity Cup, Essex Senior Cup,East Anglian Cup, Essex Thameside Trophy, West Ham Charity Cup, Essex Floodlit League, Mithras Cup, Premier Midweek Floodlit League, Isthmian League Full Members’ Cup, Kosovo Fund Raising Tournament and friendlies.
