Non league derbies

Recommended Posts

I also remember seeing them play Hornchurch in the cup as well in about 1993/1994 (someone will know). Was 2nd or 3rd qualifying round, and Graham Robers was playing. Hornchurch were leading 1-0 just before the break when the keeper (Dave Curtis was it??) picked the ball up and the ref gave a back pass (was when the rule was still not being used properly). Curtis when mad, got sent off, Enfield scored from the free kick and went on to win 4-1 !!! They must have had 300 or 400 there that day as well I think.

I remember this very clearly. The ball was crossed in from the right at about waist height and Glen Dyson tried to volley the ball clear from about 6 yards out. However, it was an awful miskick and instead of going towards the half way line the ball went goalwards. Curtis had no option but to dive to save what would have been a spectacular own goal. It was a fantastic reaction save. However, the referee blew for a backpass. Curtis, like everyone else, couldn't believe it, and in frustration kicked the ball away. Unfortunately the ball hit the referee who promptly produced a red card.

I have to say that in almost 30 years of watching non-league football this must rank as one of the most ridiculous refereeing decisions ever, and believe me I've seen many.

For completists, we took the lead within the first couple of minutes. Rupert Nelson was the scorer.
