Non league derbies

Recommended Posts

Been talking to one of my fellow birders who is a Matlock town fan who says their derby with Buxton is a bit spicy,in fact he said that he hated the retarded pricks and it got me thinking of what other derbies in non league are quite spicy

Our local one would be Romford although we don't really play them much I think there is no love list between the two clubs

Grays v tilbury looks like becoming a tasty one and Margate v Ramsgate is another one but what other ones are out their that many may not be aware of???

I went to Droylsden v Stalybridge Celtic.

Atmosphere was brilliant.

Both sets of fans standing next to each other yelling abuse, 2nd half.

Droylsden down to nine men equalised last minute.

Celtic fans had to walk past at the final whistle.

Extra stewards laid on, but fans stewarded themselves.

Still surprised it never kicked off.

Although Romford would be seen as rivals I don't think there would be too many shenanigans on the tearraces as to be honest they are are mostly too old for any banter.

Collier Row versus Hx was a bit lively for a few seasons but that was confined to the pitch as we didn't have many fans!

Workington v Barrow or Carlisle back in the 60's never went by with out a word being said when i lived up there back then.

Tilbury v Grays back then was just seeing how many goals Tilbury could score against Grays. I remember Tilbury winning 7-1 at Grays around the 1971/72 period. No trouble though as no one went to watch Grays back then. Just like now really.

Tilbury v Aveley at that period was the one. Aveley did have a few fans back then especially when Terry Mathews was manager. (For the younger readers ask Colin Mcbride who he was when you next see him)

Believe it or not, back then Tilbury were getting massive crowds then. I remember in the Athenian league, sitting on the grass, over the wall, behind the goal watching an Easter time game in the sunshine because the crowd behind the goal was so big. I was at school then but crowds that big will never come back.

Lancaster v Morecambe used to be a big one, but Morecambe obviosuly now at a higher level and Lancaster, sadly, a lot lower down.

Kettering v Rushden has turned into one in the last 20 years, although Rushden are falling on hard times crowd wise now (790 there the other night!!).

And another that used to be a biggie but for different reasons is not, was Cheltenham v Gloucester. Cheltenham are now in league though and Gloucester have fallen on very hard times and ironically groundshare at Cheltenham.

I think in the non league game the trouble is Clubs move around levels (or cease to exist) a lot quicker than they do at a higher level so these games are fewer and far between.

Others that used to be big games were all involving Basingstoke, Farnborough, Woking and Aldershot, all within about 15 miles of one another and normally played on Bank Holidays with big crowds.

I got my first ever punch in the face at Hornchurch v collier row, bloke was 16 and 6'5" i was 15,wouldn't mind, but 12 years later I was driving down the A127 and this dick was doing 40mph sitting in the fast lane,I flashed and called him a [****!!****] and eventually he let me past,I then made the mistake of pulling into the next petrol station and as I was filling up this 6'5" man mountain got out and launched a headbutt towards me,luckily i squirted diesel in his face and he ran off like a little girl

Your right about most of us Romford Boys being to old for shenanigans these days, although to be fair Hornchurch also have their fair share of golden oldies.

Its probably correct to say though, that the majority of us still consider Chelmsford City as our real local rivals as most of us can still remember the matches played in front of excess of four or five thousand bloodthirsty supporters.

The best match ever was us beating Chelmsford in the 4Th qualifying round of the FA Cup with our little fat reserve centre forward in goal for the whole ninety minutes, as we didn't have a fit goalkeeper on the day.

Barnet v Enfield would of been a biggy in the past,if Barnet continue the way they are it may become big again,my mate is a Barnet fan and still hates Enfield even thoughts been 20 odd years since they played each other in any meaningful match

Not a local derby I know, but AFC Wimbledon verses MK Dons could be a bit interesting.

There was a feature on kick off the other night where there was over 8'000 for the Barnet v Enfield derby in the fa cup in the 80's,looked like there was a good couple of thousand Enfield fans away at Barnet, think that there was also alot of arsenal v spurs rivalry involved as well though as barnet is more of an arsenal area while Enfield is more tottingham

Think you're right Rob, there was always talk of a bit of Arsenal and Spurs rivalry involved, although you have to remember in the late 80s/early 90s both of these Clubs were trying to get into the League, they were two of the top Conference sides in the country and were just 3 or 4 miles apart. Enfield back then, at Southbury Road, were as big as pretty much any non league club. Even years later when they had dropped into the Ryman (before all the saga) they were the only team to bring a "proper support" to a game at that level.

I also remember seeing them play Hornchurch in the cup as well in about 1993/1994 (someone will know). Was 2nd or 3rd qualifying round, and Graham Robers was playing. Hornchurch were leading 1-0 just before the break when the keeper (Dave Curtis was it??) picked the ball up and the ref gave a back pass (was when the rule was still not being used properly). Curtis when mad, got sent off, Enfield scored from the free kick and went on to win 4-1 !!! They must have had 300 or 400 there that day as well I think.

I remember the first season I started to go to Canvey regularly we played Enfield in the league at Park Lane.( Think it was season 99/00)

Think they had beaten a league club in the FA Cup the previous week but they brought a lot of away support that day and there was over 1,000 in the ground.

Was probably around the time they left Southbury Road but after that it all went pear shaped and their crowds dropped dramatically.

Aldershot v Farnborough used to get a bit naughty when both sides were in the Ryman Prem.

Dorchester v Weymouth always used to get big crowds.
