I know it is a subject I normally talk about but worked out something comparing Margate Football Club and the Turner Contempory Centre

Average attendance figure based on official sources

MFC - 321 each match day

Turner Centre - 357 per day open (as per KCC reports)

Cost to attend

MFC - Between £3 and £10

Turner Centre - Free (as paid for by local ratepayers)

Cost to local ratepayers

MFC - Nil

Turner Centre - £17.5 million (plus large percentage of shelved project that cost £50 million) and £2 million a year running cost paid by local ratepayers

How much land handed over by local council

MFC - Approx 1 1/2 acres rented out and paid for via lease

Turner Centre - Over 2 acres given free to KCC despite only needing 1 acre for the project so lose of asset without public consultation

How quick project took from inception to get past Thanet Council

Turner Centre - Approx 3 years

MFC - Still waiting

And the likes of Simon Moores claims we are being treated like everyone else!!!!!

As we now know Cllr Moores reads our forum and as no point trying to write a comment on his blog that points out one of his mistakes I quote his latest.

"Also, why others might comment that the building of the Turner Contemporary Gallery, funded entirely by KCC, the Arts Council and more, establishes some kind of precedent for Thanet Council to reject new rules on public consultation in favour of a Travelodge on public land in the park quite escapes me"

No, I was not suggesting some kind of precedent, just that when you quote things like disposal of Council (and therefore ratepayers) assets and sticking to planning procedure, the local residents have wondered if the same rulings and principals have been applied to a building that IS funded by ratepayers (I'm sure I see the majority of my Council Tax goes to KCC) and my taxes (the Art Coucil being Governament funded) and that the majority of locals think is a waste of OUR money.

Not to mention the Public consultation that took place in which nearly 70% of residents were against (or was it more) the Turner thingy. Nevertheless it is still put through without any hitches whatsoever. If we were listened & our voice meant anything then it shouldn't have been built but oh no not with this council. One rule for their ideas & another one rule for the ideas that MFC or any other company put forward .

All treated the same?.No B***** way is that the case . Hypocrites the lot of them.

N.B Mr Moores, public consultation, that you keep on saying has to take place first as regards to the MFC issue HAS already taken place in accordance with planning policy.I recall attending one such meeting myself in Queens Hall. Take a look in the records for yourself. I'm astounded (well no I'm not really) that you haven't yet AGAIN done your homework before spouting off yet even more inacurracies.

Oh come on Chris. You know as well as I do they will do what they want to do,regardlesss. It makes no difference. Maybe you should start a "Councillors are brilliant" thread then to address the balance. See where that gets us.

Do you REALLY believe that being nice about them win win us the day or that having a go at this one particular "know-it-all but dosen't" councillor will stop this from going ahead.

If they want respect & congratulations they have to earn it.That dosent just mean for them to allow us to proceed either..

Sorry, but at the moment I myself am livid with one person not getting some of the facts right & preventing us from going forward. He has his own agenda here & Roger Gale should be on his toes for the near future.

As for the council as a whole we KNOW about the Turner Centre being pushed through against the the wishes & advice given by the people who live here.

Are you Colonel Gaddafi's missing son? You must be truly deluded if you think a football club like Margate can help to change the fortunes of the town. It has a higher proportion of boarded up shops than anywhere in the country. It really is like visiting a third world country. The football club has been incredibly badly run it wasnt the council who knocked the ground down was it? Or arranged 2 crazy groundshares. No wonder the club has virtually no support in the area.

The Turner centre will attract more upmarket visitors to the area. And the hope must be that some of those visitors will see potential in the area and invest significant sums in Margate. And that is exactly what the Town needs.

It is going to have a knock on effect in the area. At the moment Margate really is a shocking dump.

It's not either/or though, is it? In my view, both can help the town. In our Conference days regularly there were hundreds of visiting supporters coming to the town from opposing clubs. The majority would have spent money in local pubs, shops and hotels.

Fair enough to a point. Yes at Conference level you will get a number of visiting fans. But will the club ever get back there? Under the present owners? Seems unlikely. The club seems to have been deliberately run down. Ground being knocked down huge waste of money on groundshares. Repeated planning application accepted and then the club try and change them all the time. Its really sad that the football club has been allowed to drift into mediocrity but for once Thanet council is hardly to blame.

And the kind of people who will want to visit the Turner centre will help to change the image of the Town. That is hardly something that could be said for most non league football fans.

And after these "upmarket" people have spent the 90 minutes it takes viewing the content of the Turner Centre what will they do with the rest of their time?????

And if you read the posting correctly it has NEVER been said that the football club will revive the fortunes of Margate unlike the Councils both TDC and KCC who have pinned their hopes totally and publically on the Turner Centre to save the town.

As for Gaddafi's son ask Cllr Moore to have a word with his old buddy Tony Blair for his whereabouts

It's always suspicious when somebody with very strong views about the club suddenly starts posting from out of nowhere.........................................................especially with the name Yeah yeah yeah

Yes the club have wasted huge amounts of their OWN money but i do think it's telling that those same people are still using their OWN money to try and move the club forward and into a brighter future.

Who ever "Yeah Yeah Yeah " must be a complete and utter pleb, not only has he just villified the the MFC board for reasons beyond their control he for some unknown reason is trying to justify the building of an eyesore of which 80% of people in the area didnt want. Now this may well be Mr Moores "trolling" as you suggest CE but what has any of this got to do with the dire situation we face as a CLUB. If you are this supposed council member then shame on you for your self publicising posts and blinkered approach to the town a lot of the people on this forum hold dear to their hearts..... go talk to JJ you'll suit each other!!

Well, our new friend hasn't denied it. Wouldn't it be awful if it was him? Councillors have to adhere to a code of conduct. If, for instance, it was Dr Simon he has denigrated the club, it supporters and the people of the town. I'm sure that would get him into trouble with Standards for England, website here:
