In praise of Brian Hammet

Brian must be approaching his 150th appearance for the club and he is unlikely to make 200 so I thought that I would post my views on his career as I saw him play for Enfield, Enfield Town and even a couple of appearances for Hemel Hempstead.

When I first saw him play in the 90's I wondered what people saw in him and that opinion remained with me until he left the club. My opinion didn't change when I saw him play for Hemel. In his early days at Town I have to admit I slated him and considered that he got into the team through nepotism. Looking at AJ's video it is also true that he is not much good at the "crossbar challenge".

However in the latter stages of his time during the first period at Enfield Town my opinion started to change and reached a zenith with his hat trick at GWR a ground he seems to like. In his second spell at the Town he has proved an invaluable asset coming on as "super sub" on occasions and on Monday he showed his worth with his intelligence and experience. He demonstrated that a forward in a 4-4-2 formation doesn't always have to stand on the other forward's shoulder and can do more damage by laying deep and being a supplier rather than a hit man.

He is tenacious and strong in the tackle. He lets defenders know he is there so much so that at W & F I understand a dirty individual spat at him which led to a ruction at the end of the game. (If W & F find out who that mucky individual is I am sure they will sack him immediately). He is also a goalscorer and I note that he has scored 46 goals for the club in 147(+) appearances not a bad scoring record for a player who does not take penalties.

Brian thanks for the enjoyment you have given me in the years I have seen you play and hope that you have a few more seasons in you yet.

I too have an admission, that during his firast spell with us Bryan use to annoy me as a spectator for his continuos moaning at the ref, at times, in my view, unjustifiably. However, after taking a break for a year he has come back for another spell, he knuckled down pre season, worked hard and has shown to be a loyal squad member for Steve and the team. One thing's for sure is you get a good shift from Bryan, whether starting or a sub. It's also great to see his dad and the family about as they have contributed enormously to our short history. A United club is a strong club and looking from the back seat, the Hammatts fit in well.

Blimey, we are talking if he has passed away, long may he have many more season's with us.

Nice fella.

Great lob against EFC for a 2-2 draw.

Will run all day.

Agree with Enfield United about the moaning.

Disagree with Steph about tackling.

Too many yellow & red cards for a striker.

Oh & have only ever known him as Bryan Hammatt.
