"Player faces life ban after referee assault"

I have to say Guildford made decisions about the player very quickly and have been true to there word, having been very close to the incident it was out of the blue and i hope it does not bring any trouble back to the club as the guy came from no where i dont think there was anything that anyone could have done to stop this happening bar the player himself of course. It was a truly shocking sight and some of our players are still a little taken back by the whole thing, Just glad it seems all is being taken care of through the correct channels.

It has made me wonder though how rare is this sort of thing ? I have been in football for a good few years and i have seen Ref's pushed, threatened but never attacked like this. Do any of you guys in the middle fear something like this happening to you? It does make me wonder sometimes listening to abuse from all angles sometimes it must be intimidating or do you just get hardened to it? I have to say i have often thought Sunday morning referees have it bad and that you guys at least have the backing of two assistants during cc games.

Its a job i would never consider fair play to you guys for the job you do......

I also think he is/was their captain !!!

Sunday mornings are very very lonely as a referee. In 15 years I only felt threatened once and that by someone I knew. Just cautioned him and nothing happened. Funny thing is his son know plays for my AB's

Chessy Boy - I was also there at the game in the stands watching all that happened as all the other games were off - I personally think you are trying to 'Sh!t Stir' a little - it wasn't as bad as you are making out - not that I am condoning or making any excuses for the guy - because there is nothing you can say or do to make it better! - but you are definately trying to make it sound worse.... as for your players being 'shaken up' they seemed fine to all us onlookers... infact it was a few of your players screaming call the police..... As a mutual - and as you say - Guildford have acted quickly and done the right thing - maybe we should all just let it be as it has and is being dealt with...... i doubt the referee wants to be the topic of conversation for much longer either...

Kroooner - I believe he was only deputising as captain as the usual Simon Cooper was out suspended.

On a brighter note - it's raining here in Epsom....

Banshee, No intention of stirring on my part at all the only reason i mentioned the incident at all was to put point across from someone who was close by that the club should not be held responsible for an individual and there was nothing the club could have done to prevent this.

As for our players saying call the police im glad they thought that way as it was the correct course of action to take im afraid. As for making it sound worse how exactly ? how do you make something like this sound worse it matters little if its a slap or a punch its just not the done thing. A few of our players facebook posts suggest they were still shocked about it all days after thanks and i have to say i am too.

I am sure the ref would like to forget all about it asap too, so lets just say you have misinterperated my post and draw a line under it eh ?

AFTER THIS INCIDENT, I SAY AGAIN, BEFORE WE SLAG OFF THE REFEREE'S, LETS RECALL THIS UNFORTAUNE INCIDENT, TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND COUNT TO 10. WE ARE ALL HUMAN AND SURELY REFEREE'S DO NOT NEED TO PUT UP WITH THIS SORT OF COWARDNESS. I WONDER IF THIS REFEREE WILL REF AGAIN ?

ARE WE NOT AWARE OF THE DWINDLING REFEREE'S WE HAVE GOT AND THINGS LIKE THIS (NO MATTER HOW RARE), REF'S ARE VULNERABLE TO IDIOTS. YOUNGER UP AND COMING REF'S AND CURRENT EXPERIENCE REF'S MUST WONDER IS IT ALL WORTH IT !

REMEMBER, REF'S DO IT AS A HOOBY AND WANT TO IMPROVE THEMSELVES LIKE ALL MANAGERS AND PLAYERS ALIKE. FOR CHRIST SAKE DONT MANAGERS AND PLAYERS MAKE MISTAKES, AND I WONDER WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKED IF YOU WERE KICKED AND PUNCHED !

SO I ASK, REMEMBER THIS INCIDENT BEFORE GIVING REF'S VERBAL OR ACTUAL ABUSE..................... WOULD YOU DO THE JOB ???

AUPOSTIE DOES THIS REF REALISE BOTH TEAMS/BENCHES HAVE BEEN SEEN TO BE LIVELY ON OCCASIONS SO LADS, AS I SAID BEFORE, THINK TWICE, TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND REMEMBER WHAT THIS POOR FELLOW WENT THRU' LAST WEEK AND TREAT HIM WITH RESPECT, I THINK HE'S SHOWING ALOT OF GUTS NOT TO BE INTIMIDATED BY SUCH AN INCIDENT AND STILL PLYS HIS TRADE AS NORMAL....FAIR PLAY TO THE REFEREE IN QUESTION.

HOPE ITS A GOOD GAME FOR ALL CONCERNED

I thought he was doing a Surrey Elite game on Saturday?

I remember the ref from my old Sunday League days when he was just a young pup. We had a cup final at Cherrywood Road once - dad in the middle, his two sons on the lines. Hey ho!

I'm sure he'll be alright and fair play to Guildford for dealing with it as well as could be expected.

I concur with well done to Guildford for acting swiftly. 1 small complaint is about the statement from the manager. Why do they always have to put something in there that seems to suggest the actions were justified. Bit like Kenny Jackett, Millwall manager, who after Millwall fans threw bottles on the pitch said "The referee made some strange decisions but that is not necessarily an excuse for throwing bottles on the pitch"

No all you had to say was "They are bang out of order and should be banned"
