Thursday 17th February Result

Hullbridge Sports 1 Stansted 4

Good result that, I thougt Stansted might slip up there, 3rd game in 6 days.

Stansted are a good side and we gave a go at it.We had five of our forwards(Shelley,Paterson,Read,Cleaver and Argent injured or ill plus a couple of full-back(webster,Harris) and the only senior forward available Hart struggling for fitnessand in the end we didn't have enough in the locker going forward to trouble them in the 2nd half. They are not unbeaten in the League for a reason after all.Us and another team are the only ones from ESL that have beaten them in domestic competitions. They will win it again chaps, make no mistakes.

don't get bigger now! The park pitch will have another stand soon and be nice to Stansted friends.

Essex Senior League

Hullbridge Sports 1(1)-(2)4 Stansted

Lower Road, Hullbridge, nr Rayleigh, Essex

Admission: £5. Didn't purchase programme

Attendance: 45ish (h/c) with maybe a handful from Stansted?

Also purchased: Pint of coke £1.60 at clubhouse (I had a stinking cold so the barlady misheard me pronounce "Pint of Cobra" - which they have at the bar - but I wasn't going to make a fuss about it so said nothing!).

Well first of all I suppose you all want another nightmare journey story? Sorry to disappoint you, but not tonight. Despite not leaving until 7:30 to arrange a family member's birthday, and despite a few hairy moments on the notorious windy Watery Lane through the misty/foggy conditions, I made it to the ground in time to watch a fairly decent game, at a ground I've described before. A freezing cold night, with the misty conditions almost making it impossible to see one corner of the pitch to the other before half time. Fortunately it eased very slightly in the second half.

Plenty of action early on. Hullbridge started the brighter, but it was Stansted who took the lead, with the theme of the night being poor defending. A corner from the right was left by everyone, allowing a Stansted player to rush in and poke the ball home, whilst everyone stood still. Stansted could then have doubled the lead with a couple more chances, including one where the player broke clear but scuffed his shot dreadfully with only the goalkeeper to beat.

That proved costly as within a few minutes Hullbridge were level. A ball from the left was not dealt with, and a Hullbridge player had time on the edge of the box to control the ball, and place a fine finish into the corner of the net. Hullbridge's joy was short lived however, as Stansted on 25 mins got the ball from possibly an offside position, with the shot being beaten away by the goalie, only for the rebound to be turned home with the home defence dawdling again. Hullbridge continued to press Stansted back and cause them problems, but the Champions were also threatening at times before the interval.

Second half and it was Stansted who seemed to be more up for it. Not that they had played badly but were almost gifted their two goals. Very soon they added a third, when a free kick on the edge of the box went straight in, though how the keeper never got to it I'll never know. Stansted then had a player put a header over from just two yards out, unmarked. But they did kill the game off after 65 mins when a player found himself free on the right hand side of the box, and had time to turn the keeper and defender inside out to nestle home a fourth goal for the visitors. Hullbridge did see more of the ball towards the end but could do little with it.

A comfortable result in the end for Stansted, though it can be argued all four goals were the result of Hullbridge losing possession just outside their box. Therefore Stansted didn't need to break sweat to win, despite a very determined display from the home team.

So another win for Stansted, who after (just, admittedly) 18 games, remain the only side in the top nine levels of the game to remain unbeaten in the league this season. This win took them above Bethnal Green into second, with three games in hand on the East Londoners, and more importantly go within five points of leaders Enfield 1893 with four games still in hand.

For Hullbridge, another season in mid table for them, though they won't mind that.

A few observations:

The ref got all sorts of verbal abuse from the Stansted bench all night, even when they were 4-1 up. There were a few crunch tackles but I thought the ref dealt with them OK.

Also the pitch (though it seemed OK at first) quickly resembled a quagmire, probably after tuesday's heavy rain. It was like a mudbath in places, and fortunately I don't think Hullbridge play on it again until at least next week, as the forecast rain on saturday morning will almost certainly make it unplayable.

Excellent show so far from Stansted. They will be a loss to the league when they join the Ridgeons League next season. When the league loses Witham and Stansted will any teams be moved to the ESL?

Just as I thought we were entering friendlier waters Basil you go and ruin it with an outburst like this. Perhaps you have had one too many drinks this morning down the allotment. Don't worry about me good sir, I am sure you have enough on your plate with all of your "scams". If you see my good name you can always opt to not read.

Obsession is a young mans game and you are becoming more and more cenile.

You have more mood swings then my first wife.

Coachie do you ever put a full side out?

only when they win

Dear Jenko and Tafkam you know better than me that unless you have enough dosh to replace a good injured player with another good one on loan from somewhere then you'll never have your strongest side.No reserves,no money and a first year u'18s makes really hard.We do have a big squad but players do work, get injured or ill and it's always an uphill struggle to ask them to give away ££ for a game of football these days. They do take holidays during the season as well and frankly I can say football is not top of their priorities list.I'm afraid this is the modern day footballer at ESL level and when you don't pay expenses you can't pretend things. It's as simple as that.Yes Jenko we did have 7 regulars out and the best midfielder we had has been snapped by a Ridgeons County team managed by a former Ryman League boss who offered him ££ and was on his doorstep as well so we didn't stand a chance even if the boy enjoyed his football with us.

Where did u get this bit off info from cant see stansted or even witham leaving the league stansted no chance as thtere manager and players come from london and cant see them traveling up to clacton or great yarmouth on a tuesday night and if they did go and the current mangament did leave they would struggle to find a manager and players locally who would want to do them sort of trips every other week
