A talented teenage footballer was found hanged at his home in Cheam.

Sean Geary, 17, was discovered by family members in the garage of his home in Priory Crescent on Tuesday, February 8.

The popular former Cheam High School and Cheam Fields Primary School pupil had made his debut for Chessington and Hook United reserves just three days before he died.

His family, including two younger sisters, have been left devastated by his death and are looking for answers as to why he may have killed himself. No suicide note was left at the scene.

A statement released by his parents said: “Nothing can replace the pain and heartache felt over the loss of our wonderful son.

“The love and affection shown by family and friends has been overwhelming and is helping us cope at this tragic time.

“Sean will live in our hearts and remain in our thoughts forever.”

More than 1,700 people have joined a Facebook tribute page to Sean, while dozens of his friends held a four-day vigil outside his house last week.

A sea of flowers and messages were laid outside the garage at his home.

Sean’s uncle David said Sean was a typical teenager, and was interested in music, girls, and going out with his many friends.

He was training to be an electrician at Guildford College.

He had trained as a footballer with AFC Wimbledon and signed in September for Chessington and Hook.

The football club called off their reserve team game last Wednesday, after learning the news of his death.

The senior side held a minute’s silence, along with members of the reserve side, before their game in tribute to the midfield star.

Further U16 and U17 games were called off at the weekend as they involved players who knew him.

Team manager Lee Nichols said: “Sean was a talented footballer who had recently rediscovered his love for the game. He had a great chance of a future in the lower leagues.

“He was a genuinely nice guy, and popular with everyone at the club.

“We are all shocked and saddened by the news.”

He said he had given no indication of distress or unhappiness when he made his debut with the reserve team the weekend before he died, and had said he was going to the cinema with his teammates to celebrate.

Friends sent text messages to Sean’s phone after learning of his death.

One read: “We had some amazing times together, I just wish there was time for some more, but it is too late now, you are in a better place”

Another read: “I find myself standing outside your garage not understanding why we are all crying. I look up to your bedroom window expecting you to pop your gorgeous face through the curtains.”

Bec Allott, headteacher at Cheam High School, said: “We were extremely saddened to hear about the tragic death of our former student.

“Sean was very popular, with friends at the school. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

“Staff and trained counsellors have been supporting the students who have been affected.”

A police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

Very very sad, with two boys of 22 and 23 myself it's always heart wrenching to hear of stories like this. God Bless his family, let's hope there's something special in store for his family one day in the future

I think it says something about the society we live in today, when teenagers with what seems a lot to live for take their own lives like this. Seems to happen a lot more nowadays. It must be terrible for a parent to lose a child for any reason, but unimaginable in such circumstances. Simply awful.

This is shocking news, thoughts are with the family of Sean, and where ever you might be Sean, look after yourself. Rest in peace...
