Margate FC Development - OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Going back to what Tony said earlier, higher authorities would be able to state whether the Council are acting fairly or not.

I am no planning expert but I really cannot understand how a reduction in the size of the development, whilst remaining within the confines of the original plan, can require further planning permission.

One thing that may well go in our favour is that Travelodge are involved and they have already invested fairly well in the area. They will have experts who will know all of the rules and regs and if this has come to a surprise to them as well, then maybe they would have the clout to successfully pursue this.

From what I have seen, the reduction in open space on Hartsdown/Tivoli Park would be minimal if anything at all. With a hotel and the Stadium reception area, there would be increased light emanating from the buildings, making the whole area a safer environment for people after dusk.

We are in an unemployment blackspot so the extra jobs provided would be a godsend for Thanet. On top of that, a new stadium would bring more money for the squad and should lead to more success on the pitch. I think that businesses in the area were always quite happy when 500 Morecambe fans or 2000 Hereford fans came down and gave a boost to the winter economy. A good FA Cup run could lead to massive nationwide exposure for the town.

Considering the only news coverage that Margate gets at the moment focusses on the ghost town of a High Street, the ongoing farce of Dreamland, the high unemployment and the absolute waste of time, money, effort and space that is the Turner Centre (that is just my opinion, oh and that of several bloggers, journalists and everyone I speak to) Margate is in desperate need of some positive publicity. Any company thinking of possibly relocating to the area would see a story like this and think that Thanet Council is just too difficult to work with and look elsewhere.

When you look around, some councils (not all of course) back their local football club and look at what they can do to help. It seems that TDC seem to sway from one moment to the next and will happily change their minds depending on who is shouting loudest at the time. At this moment in time, when they could be promoting an exciting development that would be beneficial to the area, they are putting up yet another stumbling block. Once again, the work starting on the stadium would be newsworthy of at least Meridian and BBC South East news (and on a slow news day may even make Sky Sports News) which would instantly give 'outsiders' the impression that Margate/Thanet is proactively trying to improve itself and with it seem more appealing.

Rant over (for now)

Brave move by the club to have a public meeting-is that stoking the fires even further ?

I suspect there is no merit in the objections and the council are merely paying lip service to the objectors (a bit late as the original plan perm was granted.

Now they have been given a second chance and the council needs to be seen to be 'listening'.

Does the public meeting fuel the flames however-when in reality there is no substance to the objections (as MSHot posts).

By calling the public meeting-it raises the profile of the whole thing and gives others/papers/ a story to make when in reality its no issue and a storm in a teacup

In this instance-i think the public meeting is the wrong move by the club-but what little do i know -and i wish the club well.

Just hope it does not backfire and we score another own goal.

As CE posts-the public meeting is fine-but imo the timing is now wrong-the time to win friends and influence people was about 2 years ago.

Still -just pray it all works out well.

UP the 'Gate

I personally think its a bit dodgy giving address out, on a public pettion that anyone in the world can see - the name and email address shoudl be fine..

Does anyoen else think it is a bit wrong asking for address??

how do you ammend it Alan?? I cant do it again and dont know how to ammend

GA11 I had the same problem. If you log in and go to your name at the top and click on it it gives you the option to delete the account. Press on that and de-register and then start again.

Does a petition in fact smack of desperation ?

(just like the anti-mob )

Are there not more sophisticated means of negotiating this through ?

I am sure it is happening, but it seems to me (and obviously i know very very little of the true facts ) that 'high level' talks between council/MFC/developers and travelodge properrty dept is what really will decide all of this, albeit that having stated publicly there will need to be a new application-the council will need to go through with that to be seen to be doing the right thing; but behind the public facade;things should be getting resloved in a professional and totally above board manner

Of the 20 odd signatures so far, we will only be able to use 8. PLEASE include an address.

On another point, we need 1300+ signatures to get in front of the council so they can review level of support vs opposition. This info is included in in the statement on the official website.

I would encourage everyone to ot question why we are doing what we're doing, but just try and support these critically important activities.

I have just read the article on Your Thanet and am a bit bemused. According to that article it appears that the application needs to be resubmitted because they have recieved a 500 signature petition. That makes things even more rediculous as they have already given the go ahead to build and there was a start date for the builders. As I posted eralier we have already been through this process. Surely there must be a legal argument to this.

I wouldn't take too much notice of that article. It seems to have been pieced together by grabbing some quotes from last year off our website, plus some quotes from the council's. Whoever wrote it doesn't actually appear to have spoken to anyone.

Agreed CE. They have yet to acknowledge my Press Release issued this morning.

isnt that the TDC attitude?......................you cant ask for support on one hand and ask us to bury our heads in the sand with the other

No, all I'm saying is that we've made an informed decsion based on discussions with a range of stakeholders on how to approach the current situation and given that, we feel it is the approach most likely to achieve our objectives. I certainly don't want to mislead people into thinking that right now there is more time to explore other avenues when that is not the case. We're locked into the Council meeting schedule and keeping the operator on board.
