Who is your favourate sporting legend??

Recommended Posts

Just listening to John Virgo (who sounds like that bloke of Wild at Heart by the way!!) on TALK SPORT talking about Alex Higgins, who was/is your sporting hero? Mine would have to 'Marvellous' Marvin Hagler! What a fighter, robbed against Sugar Ray Leonard in his last fight, he was always ripped and ready to fight whatever fight he was required to to get his win, he could box, fight, punch, had an incredible chin, was super fit, my boxing hero. He reversed both his early points defeats by knock-out victories and did the same with his 2 draws, his only recorded knockdown was a slip in the first round against Juan Dolmingo Roldan, and was involved in one of the greatest fights ever, knocking out Tommy 'The Hitman' Hearns in 3 action packed rounds. Legend, my pound for pound favourate ever fighter!

Mine would be Carl Fogarty, the four time World Superbike Champion. When he won both races at Brands Hatch in 1994 it was one of the greatest sporting occasions I have ever been lucky enough to attend. We went to Brands and Donington every year for about 7 years to see the World Superbikes, as well as going around the country watching the British Superbikes.

The thing that I loved about Foggy was that not only was he a winner and a champion, but he did it in a way that made you proud to be British. The number of nights we sat up until 5am to watch the WSB from Australia etc were all worth it for the feeling knowing that we're watching a true Brit dominating the sport.

Valentino Rossi is now by far and away the biggest thing in motorcycle racing, and as good as he is (the best ever?) and even though he's a terrific character, he'll never reach the heights that Fogarty held in my mind.

This was one of my favourite moments of his career:
