Hullbridge Sports 1 ( 1-0) 0 Bethnal Green United

Hullbridge Sports scorer: Paul White 6m

Attendance: 28

There's a comprehensive report on this shock result on another's Forum:

Essex Senior League

Hullbridge Sports 1(0)-(0)0 Bethnal Green United

Lower Road, Hullbridge, Essex

Admission: £5. Didn't purchase programme

Attendance: officially 28 (I counted about 25)

Also purchased: Burger with onions £2.20, chips £1.50 and Pepsi Max £0.80, plus pint of Cobra and two packets of Smiths Bacon Fries (just the one for me!) from a clubhouse for a total of c£4.

My game for the day. Cut it a bit fine leaving home at 2:40, especially when on the road from Battlesbridge to Hullbridge (a narrow country road, but really busy with traffic avoiding the A127 and busy urban areas, which always floods as well, and despite little rain lately had still partly flooded from the fields), especially when halfway along this long windy (as in meandering today!) road we got stuck behind a cyclist, and with the road so bendy and narrow and busy there was no way of overtaking. Still got there just in time at 2:57, with quite a lot of parking at the ground, which is situated at the eastern end of this large village close to Rayleigh...

Not surprised about the amount of parking spare, as there were so few people at the game. I knew Hullbridge struggle to get the numbers through the gate (no turnstile), but this was ridiculous, especially given one of the higher placed clubs were in town, of which there were at least a handful of away fans chanting "Green Armeh!" a few times. Mind you, Basildon only got 9 at their game against Clapton today, which is frightening for a step 5 side on a saturday! Yes it was quite windy, but it wasn't wet, or cold.

As some already know from previous visits, Hullbridge Sports' ground is extremely basic and rundown in a few parts, but given the club's level of support, there's no viability in changing it. Any shelter at all is found in the side opposite the dugouts (with just a concrete path to walk around the other three sides - no shelter) - a small sheltered area of seats - 30+ or something like that, and a small sheltered standing area (albeit no steps, just a flat concrete floor) - both modern.

Three sides of the pitch are surrounded by small pitches, cut off from most of the main pitch by some old wired fencing which desperately needs replacing. There's houses in the distance on one side, further back behind the dugouts is a large scrapyard, and the third side gives a nice view of hills/fields towards the Rayleigh area.

Most of the pitch can be viewed from the refreshments kiosk. The Social Club bar (quite a well known one locally, though I think may be leased seperate to the club) also gives a good view of the action from one side.

Did notice an aerial platform, partly damaged, making a right squeaky racket in the wind, that easily annoyed me all afternoon.

To the game, and the result was a surprise one, and it may well be a hammer blow to the small chances Bethnal Green have of challenging Enfield 1893 and especially Stansted for the title. Make no mistake though, Hullbridge fully deserved the three points and should have really won by more. The pitch at Hullbridge is notorious for suffering in bad weather and gets called off usually after fine drizzle. However, though there was plenty of sand on parts of the pitch, most of it looked fine, bar a few areas that cut up during the game. The strong winds we've had here since thursday may have helped of course.

Hullbridge started off the brighter from memory, and after about a quarter of an hour got the only goal of the game. A good shot was well saved by the BG goalie, pushing it onto the upright, only for the rebound to eventually fall to a home forward, who blasted in from the edge of the box. Despite plenty of Bethnal Green possession after that, Hullbridge had a few more chances later that half, with one attack sending a home forward clear, rounding the keeper then losing his footing, and another also going past the goalie, but the retreating keeper and defender pushed the shot from an angle around the post. BGU were more of a threat towards the end of the half, but didn't really test the keeper. A shot just inside the box that went over was their only real effort of the half. Just before the interval as the ball was played upfield the Hullbridge goalie went down clutching his head, but none of us knew why, adding a few more minutes injury time.

Much tough second half for the away side, who were now playing into the wind, which had started to pick up again towards the end of the first half. BGU couldn't seem to master the wind or the pitch, and just generally didn't look like a side capable of breaking Sports down. I can't personally remember them even making the keeper work, who seemed to have a quiet afternoon. Hullbridge towards the end could have killed the game off. One player broke clear but his shot went narrowly wide. Then moments later just before the end, a Hullbridge guy also found himself running through on goal, but his shot rattled the post and went out to safety. It made no difference in the end though, and with Southend Manor losing again, it's surely a two horse race between Stansted and Enfield for the title.

As an aside, we had a female lineswoman today. There was (wrongly) controversy about an offside call she made in the second half. Just as well Mr Keys and Mr Gray were not around this afternoon...

Just to get things right about attendances. It is well known that against clubs like Mauritius,Clapton,Apsa and Bethnal we don't get many through the gates. We have been averaging 43-45 in the last few seasons and that is about 8-9 place for the attendances.Certainly not having clubs like Concord,Great Wakering,Hornchurch,Brentwood,Romford etc in the ESL doesn't really help.Another thing we don't inflate the attendances like some other clubs do,emailing junior parents to come free of charge and so on...Honest report from the groundhopper though and the bar isn't leased to anyone plus is 54 seats stand which we'll be soon paired with its twins one!grin.gif

Saturday 5th February - Essex Senior League. Hullbridge 1-0 Bethnal Green

by Bethnal Green United on Sunday, 06 February 2011 at 10:29

Bethnal Green suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of mid-table side Hullbridge, thanks to Paul White’s early strike.

The only goal of the game came after five minutes. A couple of defensive errors cost the team dear, Dan Stanley hit the bar, then the Green Army defence cleared only for the ball to fall to White, who struck a low shot past Abraham Mahmood to make it 1-0.

After that the team didn’t really recover. They tried to create chances through their attacking options but they couldn’t score.WHICH ONES???balloons2.gif

The Lower Road pitch didn’t exactly help either, along with the swirling windy conditions, causing the ball to fly about a bit.

Nothing else much happened in the first half. After the interval, Bethnal played better and created some better chances, but all to no avail.

Leon Ryan tried a shot from the edge of the box. Anton Stephenson’s header bounced on the goalline but a big gust of wind took the ball over the bar. At the other wind was another contributor as a Hullbridge free-kick was taken by the wind and keeper Abraham Mahmood did well to prevent a greater scoreline.

However the South Essex side held onto claim all 3pts. A disappointing result all round. After the game, coach Neil Day gave me his feelings on the match:

“Yes it is disappointing, these things happen in football. We played quite well second half. However I feel it’s just a day when it didn’t work out. We have to be professional, regroup and win twice next week to get back on track.

It was poor defending, a bad goal. That’s why we lost. The wind was a factor, you can make every excuse under the sun. It’s 11 vs 11 over 90minutes, the best team should win......AND INFACT WON!288.gif

We have Bowers and Pitsea on Wednesday. Every game is tricky. If you don’t turn up unprepared you can lose any game. They have a bigger budget. We need to get ourselves in the winning mentality”.

Bethnal Green: Mahmood, Sawyer, O’Toole, Jama, Olatunbosun, Gasper, Ryan, Johnson, Stephenson, Lee, Aubynn.

Goals: White 5

Today, the result was a disappointment, but you have to say it wasn’t helped by the conditions. Hullbridge, the home side, kept putting high balls in which kept getting caught by the swirling wind, plus the tricky state of the Essex side’s pitch. blink.gifThis didn’t help Bethnal at all, they are more of a Route 1 attacking. They aren’t used to going to grounds with windy conditions.

We all hope the Green Army can improve on Wednesday against Bowers and Pitsea!!!

That seems quite perverse to take pride in not encouraging children to come along and see the senior side. Or is this another bout of petty point scoring? After all, Hullbridge are well known for inflating their squad by inviting players from other clubs to come, free of letting the other club know, and so on.

Nothing wrong in inviting our children and parents as we do as long as you don't include them in the count...Dear friend players wanna join Hullbridge because it's an environment where they can express themselves without fear of being strangled if they have a bad game. You know we are slowly learning all the tricks of gamesmanship in the game and we applied them to perfection these days. We'll also learn to waste seven dayers for players that have left us,just to play mind games although I see this as a sign of weakness or may be fear...Cheeriooogrin.gif Mikeey there are a lot of Sophists in the ESL....wink.gif

Yes, 10th place in a Step 5 league is true testament to the tactical mastery of Enrico Ancelotti. You know as a manager, as well as I do as a player, that players go from club to club in this league simply to get a game on a Saturday afternoon. It has nothing to do with self expressions - or do all the players signed up stay with the club for life? Hmmmmm ..... Loyalty to a club in this league is minimal at best. All you have to do is have a little look down the A127. The majority of players that's in either the Basildon or Bowers side have played for both sides in the past 18 months. Then you look at the dug-outs. Basildon with two ex-Bowers managers, and a Bowers duo in only their second job, the previous one being at, yes, Basildon. I bet supporters of both of those clubs really love having their loyalty thrown back at them like that.

There are no hard and fast rules on this, but the League would prefer that all spectators coming through the gate/turnstile are counted, whether they have paid or not. So, basically, everyone in the ground minus the players and coaching staff of both sides, the match officials and home club officials should equal the attendance figure.

I don't really look at what happens to Basildon or Bowers.I'm only interested in Hullbridge and the longest serving manager in the ESL has quite few players that have been with us for long time. And please call me Enrico Tiritera, nothing to do with a tortellini eater managing Chelsea.I have been in this country long before Vialli,Bonetti,Zola and co came here.I'm the real deal and speak better English than those money grabbing wenkers.Plus we are 7th in the table according points per games table from Burnham Pugh.Stansted and Witham winning tonight and us tomorrow and we are 6th,the highest Hullbridge has ever finished. That's how you measure success...anyone could managed a loaded with money side but Hullbridge|? Not many baby!!

Coachie, you thought of running a Ressie side in the Olympian League? You have enough spare pitches, just need to rope it off.

We did apply to the Olympian League for a ressies side next year but that's all I know at this moment in time.We do need a reserve side to help our Alliance players in the transition from youth to first team.Hopefully they will accept us otherwise we'll have to look at other options. But you know what? The question is not relevant to what we were discussing here!!grin.gif

Coachie, firstly well done on Saturdays result, no problem with that at all, always knew it would tough and so things proved.

Not that happy about poking fun at Bgu report from that match as I feel it is a little disrespectful to the person writing it. These reports are done by a 18 year boy with some learning issues who the club have given a chance to do some articles in order to further his ambitions in journalism. It is obvious the Bgu website leaves a bit to be desired and he has tried to generate a little interest in the club by a few articles in a local publication as well as on Bgu facebook space which are sometimes put on the website and I believe this is where this report has been lifted from. Patently obvious it's not the greatest prose and maybe some quotes are not always in context but I think he does a good job and his heart is certainly in the right place- the cartoons and comments are a bit insulting and have upset him but to be fair to you wouldn't know the bigger pictures so i'm sure no real offence was met.

Writing this against the advise of Gaffa and FD who said to let it lie but thought it needed to be said so entirely my view.

Let it lie Flip Flop.It was only a bit of banter aimed to show how people can have different opinions on a game of football.Read my match reports and you'll find out they are so biased it's unreal. My English is crap too!grin.gifAnyway there is always next year and hopefully we'll still be at the same clubs..

That's a very fair reply Coachie I can't realy argue with that and sorry if i overeacted, sometimes something bugs you and you just have to press the reply button and take the consequences and this was one of those occasions. You're right about your english, reckon you and our boy should have a 'report off' next time we meet , would be interesting to see if anyone recognises what game you're both writing about- maybe Press Off at Barking could be the Ref . Apologies again and all the best for rest of season my englishly challenged friend.
