Who would be a Referee?

i have noticed on my sunday travels, quite a bit of ref mentoring. it is quite strange it is not all about weather they get the decisions right. they want them to run backwards, straight arm. ref marked down this sunday, for starting 5 min early. coffee%20%282%29.gif

I would be challenging that assessment because there is nothing in Law about kick-off times, so an assessor should not be marking down for it (It's a league rule).

Nothing strange about advice the other items though.

Run backwards? Absolute. Do you want the referee turning his back after a goal has been scored and possibly missing the punch-up with the keeper afterwards?

Straight arm? A referee looks very indecisive when the arm is just popping out slightly from his side, which can ultimately damage match control later on...

Kick off times are important at a Seniore Level. I am aware of a refere on a CCL game a few years ago having both managers approach him and say as they were ready could they kick off at 7.30 instead of 7.45. Ref did that and was marked down as the game had been advertised as a 7.45 kick off and people were turning up 15 mins into the game. For a Sunday though slightly harsh !!

Good points made by Mercy.

Why does the assessor need to listen to the referee's instructions?

Ref: "Hello guys, here are my requests for the day. Ball in and out of play, offsides depending on what directive FIFA have given us this week. Look out for the argie bargie between 9 & 5. Support me in my awards of free kicks by flagging with me. If you see something that I don't, please flag. If I give a decision but you think I have it wrong, instead of informing me so that as a team we get the right decision, keep your flag down so we don't look stupid in front of the assesor. If any penalties are awarded, please come round and watch for the goalkeeper coming off his line and act as goal judge. Finally, any grief from anyone, let me know who it is and tell me if you want me to bollock them, caution or dismiss them. If you choose dismissal, we'll write the report together afterwards. Any qyestions?"

AL1: "No"

AL2: "No"

Ref: "Great, enjoy the game guys"

It never changes.

Actually it does make a difference because they are not all the same and if a critical incident happens in the match you need to be aware of the instructions given.

For Example

Ref - "If you see an act of what you consider to be VC then flag me and make me aware but I will choose what sanction to take.

or

Ref - "If you see an act of what you consider to be VC then flag me and make me aware of what action you consider I should take and I will take the action based upon that"

So there is an act of VC and the AR sees it and makes the referee aware. In situation 1 the referee chooses not to send the player off. That means the Referee will be marked down

In situation 2 the AR flags the ref and tells him what happens and only to caution. AR will be marked down

or

AR tells the ref and says it should be a red card but ref only yellows. Ref gets marked down.

So there you have one example but I am sure Red Spot and Mercy could give you other examples of where instructions differ. That is why the assessor needs to know what is said.

MEWC AND KROONZZZ , I'M SURE WE'VE HIT THIS SUBJECT BEFORE, BUT DO EITHER OF YOU HONESTLY KNOW WHY REF'S ACTUALLY KNOW WHEN THEY ARE BEING ASSESSED ? WHAT IS THE POINT IN THAT ?

A REF SHOULD CONTROL THE GAME AS HE FEELS FIT ''WITHOUT'' KNOWING HE IS BEING ASSESSED, THEN THE ASSESSOR CAN INFORM HIM WHERE HE'S GOING WRONG AND WHAT BAD HABITS HE HAS. I AM SURE THAT THE REF WILL BENEFIT MORE SO THAN BEING NERVOUS (MAYBE) AND OFFICIATES BY BEING TOO FUSSY AND DISHING OUT CARDS ALL OVER THE PLACE, WHERE HE WOULD PROBABLY JUST HAVE A WORD WITH THE PLAYER WITHOUT BOOKING. TO ME REFS ARE SCARED OF MAKING A MISTAKE, I ACTUALLY FEEL FOR THEM AS IT NEAR ON ALWAYS RUINS THE GAME ?

I would argue that if a referee is being correct in Law when dishing cards all over the place, then the players are the ones that should be taking responsibility for what is happening... rather than saying the referee is 'card happy'.

The referee can still use discretion for things like tackles. After all, whether a tackle is careless or reckless is down to interpretation. So a referee under assessment can still 'have a word'. Certain things are mandatory though. Player brought down and denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity: Want the referee to just have a word because everything has been peaches and cream for the previous 85 minutes? You can't pick and choose.

The assessor has to be announced because he has to be involved pre-game when the referee briefs his assistants. Team work is one of the criteria.

THANKS MEWC FOR YOUR EXPLANATION, BUT I STILL THINK THAT A REF SHOULDN'T KNOW HE'S BEING AN ASSESSED IN MY OPINION BUT HEY........
