Actually "i" is the square root of -1... "j" (in bold typeface) only has a specific meaning when we use so-called quaternions, where it is one particular square root of -I , the negative of the 2x2 identity matrix ( "i" and "k" being the others).

 

Here though Wivenhoe is just using "j" as a general symbol for an unknown ("x" and "y" are the most common letters for that though). "i" and "j" are commonly used in programming as loop counters.

I don't use i as a loop counter personally, I use meaningful variable names otherwise it makes it more difficult to debug programs. i does get used for loops though.
