As a side issue, a bit shocked that a defender got MoM!!

And who should have got it instead? Coyne might have been a decent shout until he needlessly got himself a straight red card in stoppage time, and for what? Nothing football-related even, which maybe makes it worse. I didn't hear anyone raving about star performers on my way out of the turnstiles.

What I saw was another average performance all round, hard to single out anyone in particular. I might also point out that defending isn't just about the back four either. But man marking is a basic part of the game and we were exposed three times last night against a pretty average Woodford side. I would like to think defending set plays is top of the order for Thursday night training!

Matt, certainly not a defender.

Paul Coyne played most of the match and was probably our best player. Yes he needlessly got himself sent off but he was still MoM in my opinion.

That's your opinion, old bean. Personally I found it hard to justify giving MOM to a player who got himself needlessly sent off and banned from a future game, so I picked one of the others. That's my opinion. Funny game, football - full of opinions.

Are you advocating that regardless of how well a player performs that if he pushes the referee as mentioned in this thread, resulting in a red, he should still receive man of the match?

I can't agree with that.

Yes.

So Sean Sonner has a blinding match, scores a hat-trick, does something silly near the end of the match and gets sent off. Does he still get MoM? of course he does.

Personally, I found it hard to know how you can justify giving MoM to a defender who couldn't defend for toffee on the night. That's my opinion and many others I spoke to. Yes it is a funny old game football, as you say, full of opinions.

I couldn't care if Sean Sonner scored a hat-trick, replaced an injured keeper in goal, saved 2 penalties and kept a clean sheet. If he then goes and pushes the referee and get a red, he shouldn't receive man of the match.

Ian, to answer your question - SB simply said in the programme that he had read the forum (which is something he rarely does) and was surprised to see 5 times as many posts for the defeat against Arlesey as the win against Marlow. He noted the comments about him not having a Plan B and doesn't agree with them. He says he takes the comments on board but never to heart and he thinks he has the ability to succeed at this level and above.

All fair comments I think!

As for the MOTM furore I think Coyne had a cracking game right up until the point he got needlessly sent off. With Byrne injured that was particularly foolish. You need to look at it in context. If it was a desparing last minute tackle that stopped a guilt edged chance and maybe saved a point but also collected a second yellow card I would say he still would be MOTm. But straight red for dissent? An absolute no no.

As I said previously Danny had a good game going forward and is a fair shout although personally I would have gone with Sweeny. Still it is a funny old game all about opinions!

Thanks, Martin. In terms of the posts on this forum I think why the defeats generate more traffic is because it turns into a conversation/discussion. That doesn't tend to happen after a win - it's just individuals giving their account. I don't suppose it's any different on any other fans forum so I wouldn't get too hung up about it if I was SB.

I can understand the logic of why Coyne failed to get MOTM after being the best player on the pitch and then being sent off in the way he did.

Does the same logic then rule out any player who picked up a yellow card?

The the same logic should then apply to why Murphy should also not be MOTM as it was due to his poor defending we conceded 2 of the goals.

In a defending role Sweeney was the best player.

I find it strange that just because Murphy pushed up the pitch to aid attack, but neglected his role in defence that he should get MOTM.

I thought that in attacking terms, we were much better than in the game last week, but the defence was static all evening, which makes me surprised that Murphy was MOTM. Going forward he was good but at the back he was caught out a lot like the others.

We need to tighten up at the back and make sure that we are marking properly, but keep up the attacking that we have seen in the game on Tuesday, and we will hopefully pick up the 3 points on Saturday.

A shame about the red card, but the frustration was there for all to see, all the players knew things weren't going well. Coyne's discipline has improved massively since the Aylesbury game, a shame that had to change the other night.

Hopefully we can turn this into a run of unbeaten games.

For all those who disagree with the choice of the MOTM, I'm sure the guys would be more than happy for a few more offers to help out with the match reports and in turn nominating your own choice of MOTM for the report on the site.

Form an orderly queue!!

I would defend the choice of Murphy as MOTM as I think he was our best player. Ok, we defend as a unit, but the first 2 goals (I have to be honest and admit that how the third goal came about has completely escaped me at this moment) were not down to Murphy. Both were from crosses from Sweeney's side which were headed in from in or around the 6 yard box, ie. areas that Seeby or Yeboah should be covering. Danny was a constant threat going forwrd and made some crucial last ditch tackles in defence as well. And on the Paul Coyne topic does anybody know for definate that he pushed the ref, or are we just taking this as an answer to why he got sent off? Someone I spoke to said that the other guy had his arms wrapped round him and Coyne flung his arms up to get him off and that's what the ref saw and took it as aggressive. If Coyne did push or abuse the ref then there's no defence, I just wonder whether there is actually evidence of this happening.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one because I think in most peoples opinion the defence were pretty poor with Murphy's defensive qualities being the poorest.

I don't think we should dwell on this too much but just to re-iterate IMO if your a defender your defensive qualities should out weigh your attacking qualities.
