Canvey Island v Aveley

Recommended Posts

Looking forward to tonight's match, a good win here would see us in the Semi Finals and one match from the Final, which is always a good night out. Aveley are no mugs and stuck us out of the Championship Manager Cup at the Quarter Final stage last season. However, they've had a lot of changes since last season both in terms of management and playing staff, and with home advantage we really need to be looking to progress tonight.

In terms of team selection, I imagine Batchy will mix it up a bit, and would expect Westy to hold his place, potentially with Dumas stepping up to left midfield. Also, I wonder if Ellis Skidmore will get a start, especially now that we're down a striker after Saturday?

I'm going to go for a 3-1 for The Gulls, with John Easterford, Kevin Dobinson, and Ellis Skidmore to get the goals.

If it's possible I'd like to see us name a line-up of:

------------------- Russell --------------------

West - Easterford - Moore - Kerrigan

King - Dobinson - Davidson - Isa

------------- Heale - Skidmore ------------

SUBS: Everett, Matthews, Britnell, Gordon, J Curran

Naturally rest key players like Game and Rhodes. If Wardy was fit I would've rested Easterford too.

I think Healesy & Skidmore are too alike, I would start with Dan & Jay and then change Dan soon after half-time with Ellis. As much as I want to see Ellis start, Dan scored on Saturday and had a good game and I reckon he would fancy his chances of scoring again tonight. I would also leave the defence as they were on Saturday but play Peacock (Kerrigan) left mid. Also, isn't Leon still out injured?

The way Leon and Danny Curran were training with the squad on Saturday I thought that they might be very close to returning to full fitness.

If neither feature in some way tonight, then perhaps they might tomorrow night.

Now that would be interesting to see, as I think playing Danny in between the strikers and midfield would be very effective. His link up play his superb, and if his job was do this for 90 minutes I think he was cause all kinds of problems.

However, long term I don't think we can look at playing without wingers, especially with players like Alex Rhodes in the squad. We are very dangerous down the wings, especially the left, and would have to have a major shuffle round in order to play without them.

I'd like to some of the squad players come in and slot into their natural positions to see how they do, and build the rest of the side around them.

I think Leon Gordon is looking to have a run out for the reserves on Wednesday night, although still needs an operation which is due to happen in the coming weeks/months.

I'd go for:

GK - Russell

LB - Matthews

RB - West

CB - Dobinson

CB - Easterford

LM - Kerrigan

RM - Isa

CM - Davidson

CM - King

ST - J Curran

ST - E Skidmore

Subs: Ashley Dumas, Ben Britnell, Danny Heale, Frank Everett, and Alex Rhodes.

Despite the result I quite enjoyed last night's match. The conditions were a real leveller, and the lad Tuna up front for them was class - he certainly looked like a big fish in a small pond....! You can see that Carl Griffiths has strengthened that side quite considerably since taking over, and I'd be very surprised to see them go down at the end of the season.

I think we played the better football for long periods and were desperately close to winning the game after we'd brought it back to 2-2 when Danny Heale broke through. Kingy hit the bar with a header as well, and all in all you have to say that maybe it wasn't meant to be our night.

From speaking with a number of people who were sat in the stand, the award of a penalty was a joke as Westy fouled the player outside of the area, and it's a shame that our hard work and effort wasn't rewarded with the chance to settle the match with a shootout!

Ah well, onwards to Saturday now, a big match which we really need to win against a side who haven't had the best time of things recently.

I missed the 1st half so cant comment on that, but really enjoyed the rest of the game, we played some good footballs at times, got caught out a couple of times as well and they were a lot stronger then when we played them earlier in the season. Thought the referee had an indifferent night, the goal kick he gave them in the 2nd as well as the corner he then gave us were possibly the 2 most blatant errors I have witnessed, well maybe not but you know what I mean!! Comedy moment of the season so far was when Healesy scored our third goal and was celebrating it before he realised it went wide, what a w****r cheesy%20(2).gif To be fair, we were all celebrating as well, so what a bunch of w****rs!!!!! Frankie and Jay both put in strong performances last night along with Gamo, and on a very wet pitch we played some enjoyable football. Shame we lost as I thought we had a very good chance of progressing and maybe even get some silverware, never mind :frown: Danny & Dobbo both looked good when they came on as well, in the end Aveley took their chances and we didnt, end of!

I thought we were good value for money last night and if we'd taken it to a shootout I think we would've been the favourties to progress having seen how we did it against Dartford.

Turning point in the game for me was Kerrigan missing that chance from six yards and putting it in the stand. They went up the other end and scored from the restart against the run of play, putting us on the backfoot in conditions that were difficult to weigh up passes.

Still, it was the same for both sides and whilst the slickness of the pitch assisted them in their first, so did it assist us with our first too and the 'Keeper let the ball slip under him and skid into the 'net.

Was fantastic to see Ellis get so much game time. I thought he was going to come off at half-time when he started rubbing the back of his thigh, but he played on and did all that could be asked of him. With more game time and some communication work amongst the Strikers I don't think it'll be too long before he nets a league goal.

It's a shame to be knocked out, but Aveley were a one man team and our lads gave it their all considering the conditions.

Onwards to Hastings!!!!

i think calling them a one man team is a bit harsh matt, the no.10 worked tirelessly all night without really doing anything special the defence were well organised too, the no.9 who got the hat trick was a fantastic player, he is on loan to aveley from charlton, which poses my next question, they have two on loan from charlton with charlton paying the wages but shipping them out for experience, concord also have a lad on loan from charlton, and cray had at least one from the same club, why don't we pick up these young lads???????

That is an excellent point. If the clubs aren't contributing to the wages then why aren't we picking up players from these league sides? Do we have the contacts with these clubs that others seem to?

Having seen the impact that Tuna made last night, there would certainly be case for bringing that calibre of player in ion loan, especially if our contribution was minimal/nothing.

I wouldn't exactly call their defence well organised. We got round the back of them on so many occasions it was our final ball that prevented us from leading after 90mins and we bossed their midfield. Their forwards were fast, but I think we had their supply mostly cut off throughout most of the game.

As for the loan signings, I've always questioned why we don't make use of it, but then you have to think there are many clubs at our level that are nearer to the bigger teams than us, so why send a player so far out?

If Concord can get a lad from Charlton then surely they must consider sending them to Canvey as well!!

I know that John used to speak with Tilly regularly about lads coming up through the ranks at Southend, do we still have contact with anyone at Southend? They're U18's seem to be having a good season...

From a nuetral perspective.

There was nothing between the two sides in the 1st half and neither keeper made a save !

Matt Game was bye far your best player but was costantly missed out with long balls being played over the midfield

and as someone else said the Aveley defence dealt with this.

As for Mr Skidmore he has something but is not ready and should go on loan for the rest of the season in the Ryman north.

Until Mr Heale came on there was no real link from the midfield to the forwards !

The second half was more Canvey but with no end product.

As for loaning players from pro clubs, i can promise you they do not come for nothing !
