Canvey Island v Margate updates

We were rubbish in the first half, getting hassled off the ball all the time, getting beaten to all the second balls and so on.

First goal a bit of naive defending 25 yards out, then it was 2 players with only the goalie to beat. A couple of minutes later it was 5 on 3, but we got away with that one.

Second goal the keeper tried to punch and missed, then followed play out along the goal line and brought the player down by the edge of the area. Sure-fire penalty.

JK came off at half time, with Grant moving forward from right back and Lacy coming on in his place (memo: Dean Grant is not a defender). The ship steadied a bit and there were chances at both ends. Canvey hit the bar, and Turner made a couple of good stops, and we worried them with some good crosses from Stubbs and Lacy in particular.

We got a penalty from an almighty hack in the area (shouts from crowd: he played the ball. No he didn't). Well taken by Welford, but a superb save by their keeper at the foot of the post.

A bit more farting around and then we were allowed to go home. The ref was poor, but equally so for both sides.

We built the team round Keister in the first half, and frankly it didn't work. Not much holding, and almost zero distribution to the forwards. Much better in the second, and we could have worked a draw if we had started like that.

Turner had a good game apart from that one slip, but MOM for me would be Lacy, who was back to his best and plugged a very leaky position I thought. Incidentally, Stubbsy is rather wasted on the left wing in my opinion, although some on here seem to think otherwise. I can't help thinking that Grant could become a decent player, but needs experience at a lower level where he can get into the game a bit more.

No complaints about the result.

Thanks for the report. We seem to be taking one step forwards then two back and need a consistent run of decent performances and results now. It seems IOC does not know which position (if any) is best for Grant and perhaps we need to be looking at bringing in 1 or 2 new faces. We desperately need some support for Welford up top and a combative central midfielder to plug the gap left by Marsden and Saunders.

We got what we deserved today. Canvey is one of the few grounds that is windier than ours. In those circumstances it's all about playing the conditions as much as playing the opposition. The wing backs rarely got forward because Canvey are a better team than Wealdstone. You had the impression if Canvey needed more goals they could have got them.
