>>>>Dagger - hasn't Leyton gone through an number of mergers / name chnages over the years? I do not think they are an original club are they?

This is not an easy one to answer, but here goes -

Leyton FC merged with Wingate FC to form Leyton-Wingate.

wingate moved on, and formed Wingate & Finchley (which in turn meant that there was no longer any Finchley FC). (Yes I know there was another club called Wingate but that would only complicate matters).

Leyton (ie the Leyton-Wingate as was) joined up with Pennant FC and left the Hare and Hounds to become Leyton Pennant, and then Walthamstow Pennant, and then Waltham Forest, who in turn lost the use of their Wadham Lodge ground and are currently ground sharing with Ilford (who of course are not the original Ilford and have never claimed to be).

In the meantime what most considered to be a new club, originally a Sunday club, played Saturday football in (I think) the London Spartan League Intermediate Division - sorry but I cannot remember where their ground was. This 'new' club was called Leyton FC.

They then moved to the Hare and Hounds, still under the name Leyton FC.

So there you have it - a new club under the name of Leyton FC.

only you don't - because the 'new; Leyton FC took the 'old' Leyton FC, (then called Leyton Pennant), to court to 'get their history back'.

Incredibly the court found in favour of the 'new' Leyton FC, who they decided was really the original Leyton FC, so the Leyton FC at the Hare and Hounds are officially the original Leyton FC.

The courts can believe that if they want to.

Many consider that they have no more right to the history than Romford FC do to the history of the real Romford FC.

Saw my first organised footy match at the Hare and Hounds, around 1952, Hackney and Leyton Sunday league, teams like Chatsworth and Pembury.

I remember the toilet, a pissoir, made of corrugated iron, it was perched up on a mound.

It's always very disappoointing when a team folds - offhand I can only think of one team that deserves to fold - so we now have once again one of the most famous grounds in this area vacant. Having lost Leytonstone, Walthamstow, Ilford, Woodford, East Ham, Collier Row, Rainham, Brentwood, Harold Hill, Dagenham, Romford and Tottenham Omada already, (all of whom played within a ten mile radius of Hornchurch), the number of teams folding or being eaten up has reached disaster proportions, plus of course we have also lost some other famous grounds, ie Briggs Sports, Grays Athletic, Barking's Vicarage Field, Dagenham's Arena, and Eton Manor's Wilderness and Roding Lane grounds.

Of the departed clubs -

Leytonstone - housing

Walthamstow - housing

Ilford - housing

Woodford - still there but derelict

Collier Row - now derelict thanks to [censored]

Rainham - housing

Brentwood (The Hive) - housing

Harold Hill - derelict

Dagenham - ground still there, but team defunct

Romford - housing

Romford at Oldchurch Park - ice rink

Tottenham Omada - ground still there (ground share with Barking)

Eton Manor Wilderness - Olympic stadium

Eton Manor Roding Lane - Leisure Centre

Grays - housing

Briggs / Fords - currently derelict

Who's next?

Jordan - seems like a good article for the fanzine.

Going a bit further away - we have lost the grounds at Enfield, Hendon, Wealdstone, Hounslow, Addlestone, Edmonton, Wingate (now under the M1).

When you remember that some of these clubs had gates in excess of 5,000 on a regular basis, it makes you wonder how many more will go. Forget the garbage about amalgamation being good for non league football - if anyone wants to support a merged club, let them, but don't expect me to do so.

Where did Chatsworth play? Their programmes give no indication at all.

Chatsworth were named after Chatsworth Road near Hacney Downs Station and I saw 'em at the Hare and Hounds, think there was a Hackney and Leyton match there each Sunday and other games in that league would probably have been on the marshes. I played a few games gor Bradstock, again named after a street in that area, in the East London league. Remember the army huts for changing in and the water troughs to wash down at.

If amalgamations are that good maybe Manchester Utd and Manchester City should merge as should Arsenal and Tottenham and Aston Villa and Birmingham.................funny how all the professional clubs are heavily in debt or relying on a single person but always have to keep their identitys

Maybe if these clubs lived in the real world us non league supporters would not have to put up with so much crap
