Westley

Man From Mars

What a marvellous job Graham Westley has done at Stevenage continuing Victor Greens good work and with a club that came out of the basement of the Ryman pyramid about 20 years back . Casting my mind back a few years when Graham was Manager of Enfield makes me shudder to think of what might have been and that Enfield would still be up there and of course no cliquey clan who think the sun shines out of each other ! . I think its also a fair bet that We'd still be at a revamped Southbury road with a good squad and plenty of silverware to coo over . But he was never accepted by certain parties in George Borg's wake and after less than half a season he was hounded out . Well done to those certain parties back then , I've no doubt the blame will be at Lazarou's door somewhere along the way . wall.gif

Westley is very much his own man and would have been telling Lazarou how to run the club. With his brand of football he was not the right man for Enfield then or at any time. He did poorly for us and I was glad he moved on.

Agreed MKJ. We could just as easily have been in Farnborough's position, after Westley vamoosed to Stevenage taking most of the decent playing staff with him. I wouldn't employ Westley at my club as a tea boy.

F...ing hell shall we go back to 1893 when our first manager was appointed. My great great grandad was'nt impressed with him either.

However, Westley should be proud of his achievements and in following his beliefs. It's taken Stevenage to 15th in Div 2 (some would say thats poor).

It's all about chemistry and Westley did not have it at Enfield, e.g Hodgson and Liverpool, Ince and Blackburn etc etc.

No doubt Father Jack's tea boy standards are of the highest calibre,

Graham has his follower and at Stevanage he has had the money to spend. Broadhall has been done up significantly.

He didn't make it at Enfield and he didn't make it at Farnborough. I wonder if he would have made it at Stevenage without the money.

Nonetheless he has done well and he loves football. That is why his Stevenage beat Newcastle. The quote I saw in the Observer was typical Graham. "We planned to beat them 5-0 and pointed out that if we only played 20% as well as we planned we would beat them."

His programme notes always added to the entertainment at the Stadium with his "turning a corner" every other week.

Apart from Westley being at the start of his managerial career when he became our manager (and as result still having a lot to learn and making plenty of errors).I think he also suffered from not being an overly popular amounst the fans despite being a good player and scoring lots of goals for us,

(A later day B.Hammett ).

Ps..Wasn't the rumour that Laz only employed Westley in the first place because he put some money into the club.?

Gentlemen , As I recollect he wasn't accepted at Southbury road for one reason only , HE TOOK ON THE CLUB IN GEORGE BORG'S WAKE ! and was seen as T L's puppet And guess what Jolly Jim was given the Red Carpet treatment when Gary Calder decided to go Because he was one of the In Crowd ..... Please don't deny it ! .

One or two interesting replies Steph well said old chum. Yes the programme notes were amusing to say the least .

L S All managers make mistakes and by this they learn a lot from , Graham I'm sure would have done the business for us back then if he had more time . Just where would we be now ? Sitting pretty I suspect , As Graham may have took over the club at some point .

E U Your not worth a reply as your too Cliquey and you p!ss me off with your Cliquey bile and claptrap .

F J . I respect your opinion , Fair enough , Graham wasn't everyone's cup 0f Tea . But I think you may be in error of your judgement of him.

Regards .
