Pete Postlethwaite - RIP

Recommended Posts

Very sad news folks, the brilliant actor Pete Postlethwaite passed away peacefully in hospital yesterday, aged 64, having suffered from cancer for some time. The under rated Postlethwaite was once described by Steven Spielberg as 'probably the best actor in the World today' and that says it all about him really, he worked with Spielberg on two films, Jurrassic Park and Amistad and surprisingly received just one career Oscar nomination for his performance as Guiseppe Conlon in the 1993 film 'In The Name Of The Father' about the wrongful convictions of the Guildford Four. Born in Warrington, the great man had originally planned to be a Priest but became a teacher, he eventually took to the boards beginning his illustrious career at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, as recently as 2008, despite being ill, he returned to the same Theatre to play the lead in King Lear, a role he had always wanted to play and his spellbinding performance was by far the highlight of Liverpool's year as the European Capital of Culture. He is survived by his wife Jacqui, son, Will and daughter Lily. RIP.

I'm astounded that nobody, particularly LATO, has posted a tribute to Pete Postlethwaite as yet as he was undoubtably Britain's finest ever actor, David Niven and Richard Burton included. Strangely enough the role I remember the great man most in was as the Coach of Hallam FC in the cult film 'When Saturday Comes' starring Sean Bean and the stunning Emily Lloyd and featuring the legendary Tony 'Tony' Currie. Following Postlethwaite's Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Guisepe Conlon in the 'Name of the Father', Conlon's son Gerry said 'it was like looking at my dad'. The iconic Julie Walters said 'he was the most exhilarating actor of his generating, Spielberg was right'.

Get in the real world Rhodes, while I'm sure Mr Postletwaite was a thoroughly decent man, as an actor he always come across as nothing more than a professional northerner who like all actors earned a living trying to be someone else.

Why don't you try saving your adulation for people like doctors and scientists who really do make a difference to peoples lives.

Missunderstood - Point taken but we are talking about the entertainment business and Pete Postlethwaite was a bit more than just 'a professional northerner' as you put it, he was also by no means one of the World's best paid actors and often struggled to make ends meet choosing to stay in this Country close to his northern roots rather than chasing big bucks in the US.

On which website did you read that Rhodes?

Horace - I didn't read it, it was off the top of my head as I followed Postlethwaite's illustrious career closely for many years until his sad death this week

Only ever seen one film he was in - The Usual Suspects so cannot make a true judgement on his work but indeed shame when anyone dies more so at what might be considered an early age.

Keeps - I thought every football fan had seen the cult film 'When Saturday Comes', similar to 'Escape To Victory' and 'Fever Pitch'

I haven't seen "When Saturday Comes" or "Fever Pitch" so I guess I'm not a football fan.

Funny that as I would have thought that attending 100+ matches a season would have qualified me as one.

Oh well, Rhodes always knows best.........

Maybe it's just me but I really can't believe that the likes of LATO, Horace and Sjj2112 have never seen 'When Saturday Comes' or 'Fever Pitch' as they are both 'unmissable' cult football films

Sjj2112 - I just thought 'When Saturday Comes' might have been your type of film that's all with filming taking place at Hallam FC and at Bramall Lane
