HISTORIC PROGRAMMES NUMBER 6

12-1-1924 DULWICH HAMLET v BARKING TOWN LONDON AMATEUR SENIOR CUP LOST 1-0

We were in the Athenian League while Dulwich Hamlet were a level higher in the Isthmian League. We originally joined the Athenian League in 1912-13 but withdrew after losing to Catford Southend and Barnet Alston , both by 6-0. The reason for our withdrawal was apparently that ,because of our South Essex League and London League commitments , we could not guarantee to play our strongest side in the Athenian League, which is evident from the results. We rejoined in 1923-24, with our reserves playing in the London League Division 1 , and finished 8th out of 13 in this initial full season.

Other members were Kingstonian, Redhill, Southall, Barnet, Hampstead Town, who eventually became Hendon after a period as Golders Green,Summerstown,Bromley,Windsor & Eton,Sutton United, Cheshunt,Enfield and Luton Clarence .

In addition to reserve teams the London League Division 1 included the 1st teams of STD Athletic, Van den Burgh, PLA Police,Perrycobow,Metropolitan Railway,Carshalton Athletic, Erith & Belvedere, Beckenham, Bush Hill Park and North Woolwich Invicta.

This programme , of which I have a fading photocopy, consisted of just 2 pages. It was headed “FOOTBALL –CHAMPION HILL GROUND” and no price was indicated. Insofar as any defeat is ever a good result this was as Dulwich led the Isthmian League by 6 points . The Isthmian League was a mixture of unfamiliar today - London Caledonians, who played at the Vicarage Field for several years,Casuals ,now part of Corinthian-Casuals,Civil Service,Nunhead and Tufnell Park and names still recognisable – St.Alban’s City,Clapton,Wycombe Wanderers, Ilford, Wimbledon,Oxford City , Leytonstone and Woking.

It contained just 1 advertisement ,exhorting readers to go,after the match,to The Pavilion in Grove Vale to see the best pictures in London ie silent moving pictures aka films.

The notes were very friendly ,welcoming us” with great pleasure and bearing in mind that each team has a propensity for defeating its present opponent away from home, a really good ,hard struggle should be served up “ which the result suggests was the case.In addition to their 1st team and reserves Dulwich had “the Strollers and the Juniors”. January 30th was a date to look forward to as “the next whist drive will be held at the Constitutional Hall”.

No details were given of numbers or colours. The match kicked off at 2.30 pm, which was optimistic in January but the game was finished .Our team was listed as A.G.Shoesmith, J.S.Carman, F.J.Newman, A.G.Butcher, G.B.Harris,E.J.Pettican, H.S.Scott, W.R.Bird,P.Chapman, C.W.Bush and H.Makepeace.

Dulwich’s goal was scored by one of their most famous players of all time Edgar Kail.

Notable results for us that season included Tottenham Hotspur Reserves 3-2,Kingstonian 5-0,Luton Amateurs 5-0,Luton Clarence 6-2 and 4-4,Bromley 3-2,Enfield 2-0,Sutton United 2-0. We reached the F A Cup 4th qualifying round by beating Great Eastern Rail Romford 4-2,Custom House 3-2 and Grays Athletic 2-1 before losing to Botwell Mission 5-3.We reached the London Challenge Cup semi final beating Ilford 2-0, Bush Hill Park 2-1,Clapton 4-1 and Wood Green 1-0 , lost 3-2 to Ilford in the Essex Senior Cup semi final after 2 draws and lost 2-1 to Custom House in the final of the West Ham Charity Cup.
