Hullbridge Sports 2 Enfield Town 3

Recommended Posts

The scoreline flattered Hullbridge who really were fortunate to have a Ref that helped them a bit with a very dubious penalty and some interesting decisions.

In the first 15 minutes there had been 4 goals leading to 2 - 2. Great headed goal from Quinn, good goal from Ulatowski.

New boy Ian Cooper got the vital third. We were all over Hullbridge like a rash.

Town looked good going forward and started to look like a team that could give others problems in attack.

Defensively still conceding soft goals and we came close to giving Hullbridge a draw with some interesting defending. No Hall or Fenn to blame though. We desperately miss Matty Negus and David Allen in defence. The fans are not happy with this wing back experiment.

New boys looked good. Three wins in a row. Let's see how they do against the quality of sawbo. But reasons to be cheerful.

Didn,t Ulatowski get the last goal??

Good headed goal by Quinn .......Unbeleivable penalty awarded to hullbridge, The faintest of contact(shoulder to shoulder),would never have constituted a foul OUTSIDE the box.

Cooper had a very impressive debut, covering a lot of ground upfront and on both wings.....A mixture between John Bailey and Jamie Morris, combined with the mean steak of Alan Smith/wayne Rooney...Great goal, cut incide 2 defenders and fired a low shot into the corner.

Lee smith ? showed promice when he was introduced...also covering a lot of space, and got himself into good positions....Having said that he did miss three good chances to score.

Bradd Quinn was lucky not to see red...Fair enough he didn't throw a punch,But 4 or 5 pushes to the opponents chest ,followed by a headlock, could have easily resulted in a sending off......I thought Brotherton restained himself well, when the hullbridge player stamped all over him, how the ref gave them both a yellow,i don't know, but that summed up the refs performance all afternoon,He seemed to take pleasure in being so crap, constantly laughing to himself.

i think we're slowly getting there.

No it was Ian Cooper that got the third goal.

Lee showed a lot more than promise. He gave Enfield a bite in midfield which has been lacking. Showed considerable bravery in winning a ball - perhaps against the odds - 60-40 close to me and my family down the wing and getting to the byeline towards the end of the game.

Both new boys were either out to impress and may fall back in form however if they get match practice and a regular pick in the side will ensure that the forward line becomes more cohesive.

On the down side Ian seemed to drift out of the game towards the end as he tired.

PS have to endorse the comments about Brad Brotherton. He should not have been booked. And it was a new Brad that we saw he didn't sulk get angry but got on with the job. Probably man of the match yesterday - either him or Matt Negus.

The defence has to get some shape. At one time yesterday there was a Hullbridge player going down the left wing and three defenders went to cover leaving at least one opponent unmarked in the centre. Fortunately the winger was not good enough to get the ball over however if he had!!!!

I recall a training exercise that McCluskey, I think, used to do. He would have three forwards against three/four defenders and the idea was not to score a goal but to beat the back line or the defence to clear. The exercise was repeated perhaps over a whole evening but the defenders certainly got to know the various strengths that they had and they could not be accused of loosing shape in games.

The definitive answer (it was only 20 hours ago, and my short term memory isn't THAT bad!):

1st goal: Quinn 42 secs

2nd goal: Cooper 8 mins

3rd goal: Ulatowski 38 mins

Ian Cooper is undoubtedly a class act, something I already knew having seen him play for Cockfosters, but Lee Smith was a real bonus - full of running and ideas, and very unlucky not to score. Peter U could have trouble getting his place back!

If we are going to score three goals before half time in future, then I suggest we kick off at 2.00pm each Saturday. It's not often that a game starts before 3.00pm and two goals are scored by the time everyone else is kicking off!

I liked the look of our stike force but when are we going to give up with the idea of having three at the back. The system just does not work. We experienced it at Bishops Stortford and it was in evidence yesterday.

I cannot comment on the referee's performance as I may have to run the line for him in future!

We're also only six points off Basildon with a game in hand. If we win that and give Basildon a good onld thumping at their ground then we'll be back on top.

Don't forget, the ETFC squad is strengthening and will really gel together in the coming weeks. I've heard from other sources outside ETFC just how good the new lad from Cocfosters is. He couldn't praise the lad high enough.

To the best of my memory we have played with three at the back for most of our existence.

At first we played a flat back 4 with Stuart and Bradley inside the full backs, Matty and Lee Smart. Then we acquired Graeme and Dave Allen and went to 3 centre backs inside Matty and Disco.

The 3 have varied a little with the arrival of Adam and Steve Baldwin, and Brad has played in midfield more often. Various other wing backs have had a go, but there have always been 3 centre backs.

Offhand I can't recall a flat back 4 at all last season.
