Delving into Witham Town's history in the 1950's I see that we played against Basildon TOWN in the South Essex League.

Can I ssume that this club is the same as today's Basildon United?

Definitely not. Basildon TOWN is the oldest club in Basildon, whereas Basildon UNITED were formed around 1967/68.
