Ashes prediction thread/update thread

Amazing effort. Whatever the strength of the Australian side, to win a 5 match series away from home anywhere in the world is a top effort. To win it 3-1 with all the victories coming by an innings is truly outstanding.

I think it's wrong to say the Aussies just relied on Warne and McGrath though. People forget, at the same time they retired they also lost the servives of one of the best opening partnerships to have ever played the game, and the most effective keeper/batsman there has ever been. Within a year of those retirements they also lost the back up to Warne and McGrath (McGill and Clark) and the rest of their attack (Gillespie, Kasprowicz). And Brett Lee has since retired. They had the best pool of players in the world for 10 years. Blokes like Law, Cox and Bevan would have walked into any other side at that time but couldn't get a game for them. They got complacent though and they didn't look at how to bring through the next group of players, and that is why they are suffering. England currently have 20 odd players capable of playing at that level, but need to look at what the Aussies didn't do, to ensure that in 5 years time we don't have the same problems!!

But for now everyone should just enjoy it. Lets be honest, sports fans in this country are the most ardent in the world, and these sort of moments are few and far between!!

Agree with most of this, certainly the strrength in depth of the Australians was there for all to see, and I also forgot about Brett Lee. But it's that ability to take 20 wickets in a match however that makes the difference and without those two even with the strength in depth in the Australian side, I think they would have found it much harder going. When we first took back the Ashes a few years ago, we were a much stronger side than them and should have won easily, but those two kept them in the series. Not sure how good McGill actually was, it was difficult to be around when Warne was and he didn't get many opportunities.I do agree they became complacent, hope it doesn't happen to us.

Are we continuing this thread after the Ashes for the rest of the tour?

Typical of me to turn off 5Live with five overs to go this morning 'coz I didn't want to hear us lose.

And I missed a cracker!!!
