Hitchin Town made one of their most significant signings in recent years when they secured the signature of Andy Douglas, the former Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday striker, last week.

Douglas, best known for a near-fatal stabbing incident that also involved Watford forward Paulo Vernazza, joined the Canaries after a year-long bid by Robbie O’Keefe to sign the 23 year-old.

O’Keefe could barely contain his excitement at landing Douglas. "What a great signing," he said. "Andy is a quality player who has an excellent scoring record. This shows everyone that we mean business."

A sought-after player, Douglas was the Ryman League’s leading scorer at the time of the stabbing halfway through the 2001-02 season. Last season, he spent time with Billericay, Boreham Wood and Chesham in his search for full fitness. Douglas says he is back to his optimal fitness level. "I am ready to go this season. I was impressed with the way Hitchin play the game and their plans for the future. This can be an exciting season for the club."
