Full Time: Bideford 0 - 0 AFC Hornchurch

Draw will be on this site Monday morning.

Hope the score is a typo..lol

I was kinda hoping it wasnt! Well played lads and good luck in the next round. I, for one, have enjoyed the banter over the last couple of weeks. Enjoy the nights entertainment in Biddy!

AFC HORNCHURCH proved far too powerful for Bideford in the FA Carlsberg Trophy this afternoon.

Three goals in the last 25 minutes gave the Ryman premier division side a 3-0 win at the Sports Ground in the third qualifying round.

Rickie Hayles and Elliot Styles both scored at set plays before Tommy Black, the former Arsenal player, sealed the win two minutes from time.

And the match would have been settled much earlier if the visitors were more clinical in front of goal.

Bideford had played well to get through the previous three rounds against Andover, Tiverton Town and Dulwich Hamlet.

But they were rarely offered a chance against strong and physical opponents from Essex.

Backed by their vocal travelling supporters in the crowd of 265, Hornchuch controlled the game.

In the opening exchanges, Jonathan Hunt slashed a long-range volley just wide and Frankie Curley was only denied by a superb block from Ryan Beattie.

Home defenders Darren Hawkings and Dominic Rivans were finding it hard to cope with the clever runs of Lewis Smith.

Yet Smith could only fire badly off target after sprinting clear in the 15th minute.

Biddy had another let-off when Smith found space to pick out Martin Touhy whose close-range effort went closer to the corner flag than the goal.

Matt Armstong-Ford made a fine full-stretch save to keep out Curley's drive but the goalkeeper was helpless when Hunt cut inside, only to see his stinging shot come back off the underside of the bar.

Bideford were feeling the strain and Matt Hockley's 43rd-minute free kick, which sailed harmlessly over, was their first real effort at goal.

Up front, Ellis Laight and Kyle Bassett, the Exeter City loanee, were never in the game.

Bassett was replaced by Nick Barker early in the second with Sean Downing pushed forward from right wing back.

But the switch made little difference as Hornchurch, with Curley and Dave Collis ruling the midfield, continued to dominate.

Hayles bundled home the opener on 65 minutes after the Robins were unable to clear a corner from Collis.

Biddy then felt aggrieved at the award of a free kick in the corner when Rivans was judged to have fouled Lewis.

And when they failed to deal with Hunt's delivery, Elliot Styles netted a simple far-post header.

Still protesting to the assistant over the original decision, Rivans was shown a yellow card.

By now Bideford's defensive shape had gone and Black, the substitute, took advantage with an excellent turn and finish.

Hornchurch go into Monday's draw for the first round proper while Bideford must put the disappointment behind them before their league match, next Saturday at Cinderford Town.

Bideford: Matt Armstrong-Ford, Sean Downing, Ben Wood (Raiff Gwinnett), Darren Hawkings, Dominic Rivans, Ryan Beattie, Matt Hockley, Matt Bye, Matt Andrew, Ellis Laight (Kevin Squire 70), Kyle Bassett (Nick Barker 50). Subs not used: Noah Keates, Craig Laird.

AFC Hornchurch: Darren Bechet, Dave McSweeney, Rickie Hayles, Elliot Styles, Ronnie Fletcher, Frankie Curley, Jonathan Hunt, Dave Collis, Martin Touhy (Joe Benjamin 75), Lewis Smith (Tommy Black 84), Michael Spencer. Subs not used: Ross Wall, Mitchell Stuart-Evans, Billy Coyne.

Superior fitness accounted for Bideford in the end. They did well to hold us in the first half and made a game of it, but I feel Hornchurch were always the stronger team and deserved the win.

Special mention to the officials and fans of Bideford who were a terrific bunch of people, especially to Biddywin and that nice gentleman in the wheelchair. Really nice people who made us feel welcome from the start.
