E&E

got a ref in just to look at it around 12.15pm. I personally cant see any problem with it as most of the pitch had thawed out at midday today but just to be on the safe side especially as tomorrow's ref is coming from hammersmith. I dont want him getting here calling it off as his expenses will cost us a fortune.

But i sure it will be ok & look forward to speaking to you tomorrow & hope its an entertaining as the match a couple weeks ago

And further to this, what will happen this Saturday?

I know snow is forecast, but until it gets here, then the pitches must be playable unless frozen off, seeing as we have had no rain recently.

However, please can someone let all refs know that just because a pitch is frozen at 9.30 in the morning doesn't mean it will be unplayable at 3pm. I've lost count of the games in recent years that were called off early on a frosty morning, only to be stuck at home watching the footy results while the entire day has been sunny and bright.

I am a firm believer in waiting as long as you can before making a decision unless it is obvious. Saturday's game really shouldn't have been called off at all at Merstham, but with an hour and a half before kick off, surely work could have been done on the (minimal) offending areas that the ref imagined saw.

I have been far afield only to find late postponements, but if there is a chance that the game will be played, surely that is better for the teams who have travelled and the clubs that have incurred programme and hospitality costs. Every now and then it is frustrating, but not half as frustrating as finding out a game is off six hours before kick off for a frost that will melt. All the refs seem to be worried about is that they think they'll get litigation if there is an injury and this mindset needs to change or we all might as well pack up for December because "it's a bit cold"

Otherwise we'll all end up with a stupid number of fixtures to play near the end and teams like Guildford who hope to go far in the Vase would find that any title aspirations would be dented by having to play three times a week in March and April. Refs must use a bit more common sense with these deliberations, and maybe should even be required to take a picture of the worst part of the pitch to submit with their confirmation of postponement.

Starting with this Saturday. The forecast is for snow from the north east of London, but unlikely to reach the south west, so Ash should be on, as should many others in that area. However, with a minus three forecast for Friday night but plus three for Saturday, please don't make the decisions too hastily.
