Potters Bar Town (1) 1 Petts 20

Enfield Town (0) 0

Attendance 161

In a tetchy affair, Town succumbed to a single mistake and it cost them dearly as they failed to solve their goal scoring conundrum.

Elvis Balic tried his luck in the first minute, his shot drawing a great save from Rob Blackburne. Adam Wallace was only denied by an interception from Matt Clifford, as Enfield pushed forward. Luke Carroll picked out Joe Espinosa at the back post but Blackburne saved the resulting header. A long ball forward caught Blackburne in two minds and he found himself stranded as Tommy Petts glanced the ball over him into the goal, Jey Siva unable to clear the ball off the line. Minutes later Carroll beat Blackburne again only for his shot to hit the bar. Enfield were given some hope after a challenge by Rudi Hall resulted in a ruckus that ended with Chris Doyle being dismissed, but they failed to make their numbers count.

The second half started with Kirby coming close to putting a Siva cross away. Deniz Mehmet and Wallace both came close with shots, but Enfield's best chance came when Siva picked out Hope at the back stick. Hope put the ball back across the goal, but Wallace put his header into the ground missing the target. Shane McWeeney punched clear a minute later only to watch helplessly as Richard Morton's shot cannoned off the bar. We then got ten a side when Morton was shown red for a challenge when trying to prevent the ball going out for a goal kick. A triple substitution failed to pay off, though Leon Osei's first action saw a shot blocked. But it was not to change the outcome of this incrasingly fractious game. Blackburne showed his confidence, getting out quickly to block Espinosa. But in front of goal, Enfield still struggled. Osei set up Hope, only to see the shot sliced wide, and Mehmet had a shot blocked, but time for an equaliser eventually ran out.

Potters Bar Town: Shane Mcweeney, Aaron Ferdinand(Josh Urquhart 77), Matt Clifford, Elvis Balic, Denis Paratusic, Dan Odamo, Lewis Collins(Leon Skinner 74), Chris Doyle, Joe Espinosa, Tommy Pett, Luke Carroll(Billy Sentance 65)

Nothing seem's to be going right for us at the moment. Whether people/fans like it or not the real reason is down to injuries and the recent neccessary team changing because of it.

The squad had managed to put a fine run of results together upto our elimination from the cup's but weakness's will and eventually are being punished. One area being punished are the odd mistakes we have been making in defence and our inability to put our chances away.

Saying all the above, our approach play was again very dominant and very good, it's just we were lacking the killer touch in and around the box. No good us moaning about it as I believe the team is still in good hands and those in charge are the right one's that will pull us through this rocky period and eventually into the top 5 at least.

EU one point from twelve in the league, and that against Leyton at home & knocked out of both cup competitions is not a good run & refuse to believe we were "unlucky" or "hard done by" in all those matches.

I was at Leatherhead & thought we was fantastic, I was at the home game verses Great Wakering & thought other than the first ten minutes we was not just awful we was extremely poor, I was also at Tonbridge where we seemed to lack interest & never threatened to attack let alone score, can't comment on the other games as I was not there, so all I ask is can we have an unbiased summary?

Injuries & bad luck are not excuses for a last minute penalty home draw with the likes of Leyton or losing six points to the likes of Potters Bar, with one match played against ten men for sixty five minutes.

Come on say it like it really is, Steve has done a blinding job for us since he arrived & long may he continue but we need to sort some results out......and soon.

Gazza-I think we all actually agree with your comments including Steve and Jason, results are definately not good enough and we can't hide behind the excuses of injuries and bad luck for ever, although they are factors.

But when we consider we've been without SB for the entire season and have sorely missed Ben H too. On Saturday we had, to date, player of the season Sam Byfield, Jordan Lockie and Michael Bardle missing, then we have a case of half the 'automatic' first choice players absent, we are gonna have to add Rudi and Morton to that list as well in about 10 days through Suspensions. Saying all that our approach play has been acceptable and of a very good standard its just the finishing which have been below par.

Like I've said above and in a previous posting things can turn around very quickly but we need the playing resources to help with that. We have 28 games of the season left and the only disadvantage is we have less room for errors as we play catch up, but a tidy little run will see us catapult up the league.

These are the times when we do not need to panic and we will come through this stronger and with thicker skins.

What you say is all true EU.

However I thought that the MOM yesterday was Potters Bar's number 6. His positioning, reading of the game, tackling and clearing were reminiscent of Graham Roberts without the aggro. I chatted about this to friends around me and was told he was once a member of our successful youth set up.

"What players who have left are better than the ones remaining" Well I have picked out Max before and now PB's number 6 must be there or thereabouts.

I think that our squad has demonstrated that they are unlikely to be promotion candidates this year and are certainly not up to premiership standard if we did get promotion.

I think a change in tactics is necessary which include a rebuilding of the squad. Introduce some new blood, like Jay, who was our best player yesterday. Not worry too much this season but set ourselves up for next year in our new ground.

I would rather we have a settle side at the end of this season anxious to push for promotion next season than find ourselve in a promotion position and even promoted and not be able to maintain ourselves in the premiership.

Take a look at this table,

Forget promotion we are in a relegation struggle now.

Steph, the Potters Bar #6 was Dan Odamo, who was, indeed a member of our youth set up, and was promoted to the first team squad by Stewart Margolis, although he never made it onto the field in a first team match. When the Margolis regime started to go through ten new players a week, Dan was, understandably, lost in the rush. He then spent a year honing his trade at Step 5 with Broxbourne Borough before being brought to PB by Mike Smee. I therefore don't think that the current management can be blamed for losing Dan, as his departure was down to a previous regime, and there was no guarantee that he would have turned into a good player anyway.

Two, entirely unrelated points from yesterday:

Richard Morton's sending-off was one of the harshest dismissals of a Town player since we left the ESL.

and

Any chance of us signing Potters Bar's #9 Jose Espinosa?

But when we consider we've been without SB for the entire season - Stuart LEFT at the beginning of the season - and was NOT replaced

and have sorely missed Ben H too. Agreed - but hey - all teams get injuries.

On Saturday we had, to date, player of the season Sam Byfield, missing, Erm, there are a lot of supporters who would not agree with your opinion on this. Some feel he is lazy and produces for 5 mins a game and gives away possesion regularly.

Like I've said above and in a previous posting things can turn around very quickly but we need the playing resources to help with that.

These are the times when we do not need to panic and we will come through this stronger and with thicker skins. A thick skin is certainly needed now.

Many of us travel miles to watch games, even home matches and the quality of football being played and therefore "value" is currently poor.

We cannot continue to rely on Stuart to return and save our season. He should have been replaced when he left - his return would then be a bonus for the team ( we assume anyway ).

As said before, it's about opinions, but the feeling I get is that a lot of supporters are going to drift away - and that is not something the Club wants at this critical time and proposed move etc.

The fixtures just in the next month are all difficult and by current standards may not produce many points.

I was not attaching blame to Stewart for the loss of the number 6 and I am certainly not attaching blame to him now. The point I was trying to make is that we have let some good players go. Many of them had the impatience of youth but they have developed into class players now. It is always difficult to get the right blend of youth and experience especially when many of the youngsters do not demonstrate respect for the older members of the team. (No names no pack drill).

As evidenced by the broad grin on Elvis Balic's face as he walked away following his miraculous recovery. Amazing the therapeutic value of a simple red card.

Not able to travel up for the match yesterday but, like everyone else, very disappointed with the result. That said, I was not totally surprised by the outcome, allowing for all that has gone before, as this was our third defeat by Potters Bar over the past month, and they are certainly a good young side, as they proved when they visited Goldsdown Road the week before last.

Very interested to read the various comments and views on yesterday's match, and our recent dreadful run of results, which seriously threatens to torpedo our hopes and expectations for this season. So what is the answer, and how quickly can it be sorted and turned around before the rot well and truly sets in? We all have thoughts and ideas as to how the problem can be resolved, but only Steve Newing and his team can provide the solution to our present demise.

We all know you don't always get what you deserve in football. However, it can't always be put down to bad luck or not getting the rub of the green. If we are creating lots of chances, and not putting them away, as appears to be the case, the pressing priority ( in the absence of SB) is to recruit the services of a proven striker to enable us to get back on track as quickly as possible.

There are no easy matches in this league. Some fixtures on paper look more difficult than others, but we can match most teams at this level if we return to form and inject new blood to liven things up in a couple of key areas.

Let's remain positive and help Steve and the lads through this sticky patch.

Steph-One of the difficult reasons we can not keep fringe players happy is for the lack of convenient facilities in our borough. Finding Astro turf training facilities on a Tues/Thursday evening is as about as simple as finding a penny black in a book of first class stamps.

Our first team train in Boreham Wood on facilities just enough for a team to train on.

Therefore, where do we train the promosing youngsters (17-19year olds) who's travelling options are limited. Society has changed and parental interaction is few and far between for teenagers with many in single parent environments. A very difficult scenario for a lot of talented youngsters, whence our need to promote the PASE Scheme more.

OT-I dont think we need to build for another season, I think we have a fine nucleous to progress this season, we just need the personnel we have on board available to us. Stuart did leave but it's not easy replacing that level of effectiveness. Stuart missed about 5-6 games when he 'left' and on his return only managed about an hours football before getting the freak injury. My conclusion therefore is he has been unavailable for the season to date, looking forward to his return along with the other dangerous characters in our mix.
