Just been browsing the history again, in 1913 Margate played the Caribees (who were they?) at the Hall By The Sea ground, does anyone know where that was, or is ?

Looking on the web, 'Hall By The Sea' was the name of a dance hall & restaurant on the site of what became named as Dreamland.

Of course, you should have looked here first.

From the history site there were two different pitches at Dreamland/The Hall by the Sea.

The second one was what became the Dreamland coach park and, subsequently where the Water Chute, Ladybird and Mary Rose rides where sited. The first one, which is the one in question here, must have been somewhere else in the park. I would guess more Big Wheel/Looping Star area simply because that is the only other part I think would be big enough.

I am pretty sure I have asked Jeff before about the Caribeeners and as I recall they may have been based in Canterbury and that is about it. I may be wrong though.

I believe one of the pitches was on the site of a coach park that was situated where the Sunley Tower Block and car park is situated.

There are pictures of both grounds on Jeffs History site under

Margate team photo from the 1901–02 season.Margate Football Club was founded in 1896 as an amateur club, playing friendly matches on local school grounds. In the years prior to the First World War the club played in several different amateur leagues, with little success, and played at various grounds in the Margate area before settling on a pitch at what would later become the <A title="Dreamland Margate" href="/wiki/Dreamland_Margate">Dreamland amusement park in 1912. This ground became known as the Hall-by-the-Sea Ground, taking its name from a local dance hall.[

Great picture, were there no goalkeepers in those days or did they wear coats ??

Sorry was not around then Tom (nor was my great grandfather). However, I think Broadstairs Dave, Drummer, Crusty, Cookie or AB could answer the question as I believe all of them were supporting the 'Gate' then. ;)

39 years before I was born Jim - If I had been around then, the only gate I would have been near would be uncle Herbert's gate to the field with the cows in it, at Higher Court Farm
