ETFC v Leyton

And Liam Hope also flashed a shot across the face of the goal that would have made it 3-2 in injury (and sending off) time.

Rudi sent off 4 minutes after coming on as sub for one of those tackles we all thought he'd put behind him.

James Hamsher, having already picked up a yellow in the first half for kicking the ball away, then repeated the feat to even up (or should that be even down?) the player count. The first time I've seen a player get two yellows both for kicking the ball away.

Don't know what to say. I'm frustrated and dumbfounded, certainly doesn't feel like a win to me. What do we have to do to catch a break? What do we have to do to convert large spells of total dominance in games into goals? We were far superior tonight, the amount of times we got to the byeline, got into good positions and played balls into dangerous areas. Are we doing something wrong defensively at present as the oppo appear to take every chance that comes their way whilst we do everything but score? Are we over committing and neglecting defensive duties, leaving us outnumbered in midfield at times and vulnerable to the counter attack? So many questions going through my head, but mainly just frustrated that our good play is not reaping the rewards. It is not for want of trying or due to a lack of effort from Steve and the lads, they are giving their all for the club and playing their own brand of football.

Keep going you Towners!! Let's go to Potters Bar and turn them over, then we can be the ones celebrating at the final whistle.

Ps. Another game, another awful ref, although I must say Rudi's challenge was not the best.

Enfield Town (0) 2 Hope 85, 90

Leyton (1) 2 Traore 25, Laryea 83

Attendance 152

Enfield squandered a good opportunity for a confidence boosting win against a struggling Leyton side. Despite laying siege to the Leyton goal in the first half they conceded a soft goal putting themselves under unnecessary pressure. Sam Byfield had thundered a shot off the post, and Richard Morton was only denied by two good saves from Aaron Omand. But as Town’s head of steam built, a casual moment in defence led to the opening goal. A cross from the left was deflected onto the bar by Paul Campbell and the ball fell for Mamadou Traore to hit home from the edge of the six yard box. Town continued to press, but over elaborated in front of goal and struggled to find a way through. Andrea Molnar crashed a header just wide, almost adding a second for Leyton.

A flat second half performance compounded the problems with few clear cut chances being created early on. It was only after the introduction of substitutes Rudi Hall and Liam Hope that Enfield regained any kind of momentum. Hall was not to play much part, dismissed for a challenge after only 4 minutes, but Liam Hope made a much bigger contribution. James Hamsher having picked up a booking in the first half for kicking the ball away, inexplicably repeated the feat picking up his second card and leaving the field. It didn’t seem to have made much difference when a second giveaway goal seemed to seal the win for Leyton with Kevin Laryea allowed to slot home unmarked at the back post as Enfield pushed forward. With Enfield stung into action immediately by the ease of the second strike the Leyton goal came under renewed pressure. When the ball fell to Hope he poked it just inside the post to inspire a renewed effort. He could have had a second, firing a Sam Byfield cross point blank into Omand’s midriff. Belatedly turning the screw, Enfield kept pushing. Adam Wallace had a shot blocked by Molnar, and Byfield drilled the follow up over. Hope then seemed through getting past Omand, who just managed to get enough on the ball to prevent it going in. Hope was not to be denied though and when Wallace was fouled in the box, Hope’s penalty gave Omand no chance. He could even have completed the recovery with the final attack of the game when his shot on the turn skimmed the outside of the post as it curled wide.
