Celtic have banned a charity from selling poppies at their stadium for Remembrance Sunday, prompting the Poppy Appeal to plead with Celtic chairman John Reid, the former Defence Secretary, for a change of heart. (News of the World) :flame:

The company licenced to sell them are 'The Poppy Appeal,' there are loads of sub companies that sell them.

To be fair to Celtic, they don't allow ANY charities to sell things within the grounds. The way the article reads is that have specifically said they won't support the Poppy Appeal.

The majority of the major clubs get a bit uptight about charities collecting in their vicinity.

Last season there was a blogger who did a 'From Runcorn2Wembley thing', collecting money for Cancer Research on the way. His road to Wembley and the ease of which he was able to collect money -

Runcorn Linnets - no problem

Bamber Bridge - no problem

Maine Road FC - no problem

Guisely - no problem

Kendal Town - no problem

Nuneaton Town - no problem.

MK Dons flaty refused (twice) although the local ASDA allowed a collection outside their store.

Reading refused for the game v Burnley as they'd already given permission for Guide Dogs For The Blind to collect on that date. The major stores outside the ground also refused a collection. Reading did allow the bloggers to do a collection before the next round at home to WBA though.

WBA refused a collection for the replay.

Reading refused again for the game v Aston Villa as each charity is only allowed to do a collection at the ground once in a season.

Aston Villa flatly refused a collection and wouldn't even give the charity a plug on their website as they have their own nominated charity.

Chelsea didn't even reply to emails whilst the Met Police, the FA and Brent Council all refused a collection outside Wembley for the semi and final.

It's a bit 'Daily Mail-ish' to just slate these clubs because they won't allow someone to collect money but they probably get dozens of requests for every game. Whether the club agrees with the charity or not is irrelevant. You don't want a day out to a Premier League game to be like a day out in Camden High Street with people asking for money every ten yards - even if you agree with the cause.

Even my own company - Royal Mail - has a nominated or 'preferred' charity which is voted for by the employees every three years.

I used to work for a Premier League club (now Football League) and there were hundreds of requests daily. What they did was if the request qualified (don't know what the requirements were fully), then they could buy a shirt or ball and it would be sent to the training ground for the players to sign.

Unfortunatley it was pot luck on the day who would be bothered to sign (its hard taking a minute out of your busy life after training to sign a few items!!!).

It doesn't surprise me Celtic wont allow poppies to be sold at their ground. In the eyes of some Celtic supporter it is seen as showing support for British troops (who wear union jacks on their uniforms).

I lived in Northern Ireland for a large part of my life and not once did I see a Celtic supporter wear a poppy. Some of their fans claimed it was because of Bloody Sunday!

When I was at Camberly's ground last season I was surprised to see Help for Heroes collection boxes round their clubhouse given the extensive collection of Celtic photo's on the walls.

Anyway I support Rangers (and Egham of course!) and wear my poppy with pride!!!

The two aren't mutually exclusive. many of the Celtic supporters at the club put their change in the Help For Heroes bucket.

There's actually a poll on a Celtic forum regarding this. Admittedly it's a small sample but 23% say they wear a poppy, 19% say they won't because they hate what it stands for, the majority don't care. There were many Catholics and Celtic players who fought and died for 'us' in various wars.

VPCTFC, sorry! Wasn't trying to stir things up. I agree there are Celtic fans who will wear a poppy and I have Catholic friends who currently serve in the British Armed forces. I was only surprised to see the Help for Heroes boxes beside Celtic photo's given my time in Northern Ireland where I never seen that before. I was not having a pop at Camberly or their supporters or the Celtic supporters club.

Anyway the link below hopefully explains what I meant: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11709524

We no longer have a problem on this front UK SUB as the Celtic contingent have defected to Camberley Rugby Club a fine association one would imagine.

Quite right TC, Sky etc. was only cancelled after the Bunnet left, however SL, with the negative vibes coming from the Friends of Crabtree and the many wrong assertions being banded about, I think the Club may have a struggle to get the plans through.

If you think that's bad, look at page 13 of today's (Friday 12th Nov) Daily Mail, just about sums this country up!!!!
