Question for LgeChairman and Town fans

Recommended Posts

What is the furthest an Essex Senior League team has got in the FA Cup, what year and who was the team?

Same question for townies regarding EFC. How many times has EFC reached the third round and which league teams have they beaten?

If my memory serves me then Jim Chandler had in the past led EFC to a win in the FA Cup over Chesterfield FC and very good draw with Preston North End FC before finally losing at Clarence Park.

Answers for EFC

Barnsley - 3rd Round at Tottenham lost 3-0

Blyth Spartans - 3rd Round lost, I think 1-0 this was after we had beaten Northampton in the second round.

League teams beaten

Wimbledon -4-0 first round when

Northampton

Chesterfield

Were Barnet a league club when we beat them 7-0?

Draws with Watford and Reading in the second round.

Sorry to be the pedant, Steph, but that Barnsley game at White Hart Lane was a 4th round replay. We beat Hereford in the 2nd round 2-0, drew 1-1 at Port Vale in the 3rd then won the replay at home 3-0, then drew at Barnsley 1-1 (Burton). T'was rather nice to be the only NL club left in the Cup and featured on The Big Match that night.

That season was my first and is etched firmly in my memory. Wow. Hooked for life or what!?!?

I don't think so. In the season after our fourth round achievements we played them in the third round at Southbury Road losing 3-2. The only difference between the two sides was Vince Hilaire. Without him playing we would have won.

There was a victory at Palace

It was against Walthamstow Avenue in the Amateur cup in 1967.

1-0 Walthamstow hit the bar in the final minutes and the Tannoy played "I was Kaiser Bills batman" in the warm up period.

I forgot Port Vale many thanx.

We were once 2-0 up against Newport at half time but then lost 3-2. I got pushed down the terraces in that game.

Actually the Newport result was 4-2. Steve Turner hit the post when we were 2-1 ahead. Had that gone in I think we'd have hung on.

Newport's attack was led by a certain John Aldridge, but it was Tommy Tynan who did the damage with a hat-trick as I recall.

My first E's game was a win 3-0 at home to Exeter City in 1984, so add them on. Also, I believe the Wombles were beaten twice in the F.A.Cup, plus that night in Torquay 1-0 and also the Orient after 3 games. There are loads more of course, but those are some of my faves. Oh yeah, Cardiff too.

Sorry for delay but delighted to say that the ESL "record" is held by the one and only CANVEY ISLAND FC who, in 1993-1994 beat Brightlingsea Utd 3-1 in PR, Basildon Utd 1-0 1QR,the "mighty" Boston United 3-2 in 2nd Q , Bishop's Stortford 1-0 (Mr Leo Fortune-West was not amused) in the 3 QR and then, in a memorable day out at Conference League, Kettering Town, we went down and out 1-3 despite a 58th minute Andy Jones (now at Billericay) goal in the 4th Qualifying Round. They then lost heavily (0-3) to Kidderminster in Rd 1. Happy Days.

. . . but no mention of that glorious visit to Filbert Street when Saint played as the lone striker because Gary Abbott was suspended. Rids played in that game too, showing that there is someone else with FA Cup experience at Enfield Town other than Jim Chandler.

Remember when Leicester missed the penalty - us Enfield fans went mental!

Ahhhhh the memories of the FA Cup. My favourite has to be that York City game a few years ago though (the last ever FA Cup game in Enfield) where we came back from 2-0 down at half time to draw 2-2 - and we should've WON 3-2 - but the goal was disallowed due to a dodgy lino.

Chesterfield away - I MISSED the coach for that game - how gutted was I? It wasn't so bad though - I got to see Sky Sports doing extensive coverage on us during the game (live match update, and being able to hear the Enfield fans sing) - and when our winning goal came through, the panel of commentators starting cheering! It felt so weird.

Then PNE away - I made the coach for this one alright what a stadium to play in! And to hold them out for a 0-0 draw! Didn't PNE have two goals disallowed too? Then we had the replay at Clarence Park - I SWEAR we could've beaten PNE had we been at Southbury Road - that stadium was like playing with an extra man during FA Cup games.

Fond, fond memories of the cup. I hope we have plenty with ETFC.
